LOST BOHEMIA with Director Josef Astor
Saturday, January 28, 7:30-9:30 pm
A little known world of Carnegie Hall and its illustrious artists is discovered in this documentary by Josef Birdman Astor. A tenant in one of the 160 studios on top of Carnegie Hall, Astor captured his artist neighbors, a rapidly vanishing world from 1985. Astor’s film follows the protracted battle by the tenants to preserve their community and the rich heritage of the studios. The studio’s significance to 20th Century culture cannot be overstated, as generations of legendary performers and artists lived and worked in them including Isadora Duncan, Marlon Brando, Barnett Newman, Agnes deMille, Marilyn Monroe, Leonard Bernstein, Ruth Gordon, Mark Twain, Martha Graham, Paddy Chayefsky, Robert Redford and Lee Strasberg. Director Josef Birdman Astor joins Megan Smith-Harris for a discussion following the film. Suggested donation of $5. Refreshments served. The New Perspectives Documentary series is programmed and moderated by filmmaker, Megan Smith-Harris. Registration highly recommended.
