WINRs (Wilton Intermediate Nutmeg Readers) Circle

Come to the WINRs Circle, a book group that discusses the 2010 Nutmeg nominees for kids in grades 4-6. CT’s Nutmeg Award encourages children to read literature selected by a panel of state librarians. The children choose their favorite book out of ten titles. On the first Saturday of each month the WINRs Circle will meet for fun, pizza donated by Wilton Pizza and discussion. May’s book discussion is Paint the Wind by Pam Munoz Ryan. Experienced YouthAARP Driver Safety Class

Session I

The AARP Driver Safety Program is the nation’s first and largest classroom driver safety course designed especially for drivers age 50 and older. The two-part, eight hour course covers the normal changes in vision, hearing and reaction time associated with aging and provides practical techniques on how to adjust to these changes, along with learning to operate vehicles more safely in today’s increasingly challenging driving environment. There are no written or driving tests – classroom only. Session II will be held on May 16, 2009. Registration required. Program cost: $12 for AARP members; $14 for non-members, payable at time of first class (check to AARP or cash only).

How to Keep Your Kids Safe Online

2-part program May 13 & 14. A panel of local experts address teens and today’s popular social networking sites like Facebook and MySpace. A Workshop for Writers and Others Who Want to Write

This two-hour workshop is designed both for published writers and for those who feel that they want to write, but don’t have a writer’s toolbox. ‘Write Yourself Free’ is designed by Susan Horgan, Emmy award-winning producer/writer from daytime television, screenwriter, and personal life coach and by Patrick McCord, a college professor specializing in writing instruction and cognitive narration. Susan and Patrick bring their varied experiences to address some of the intrinsic issues and difficulties in creative and nonfiction writing. This workshop will offer strategies for conceptualizing projects, tapping inspiration, overcoming blocks, and understanding the story as a fundamental form of logic and communication. An Evening with Rachel Carson

As part of The 100-City Tour, Wilton Library will present a film screening of Kaiulani Lee’s documentary-style film about Rachel Carson, pioneering environmentalist and author of Silent Spring, published in 1962, in which Carson exposed the risks of chemical pesticides. The film depicts Carson in the final year of her life, struggling with cancer but recounting with both humor and anger the attacks by the chemical industry, the government, and the press as she focuses her limited energy to get her message to Congress and the American people.
