“Gotcha Reading” Photo Contest For Teens
Wednesday, July 1-July 30,
For teens entering grades 7-12 and 2009 H.S. graduates. Submit original photos of other people reading. Each person may enter up to two 5×7 or 8×10 photos. Prizes awarded for the most original place found reading and the most artistic. Begin accepting photos on 7/1/09. All photos must be submitted by 7/30. Photos should be dropped at the Circulation Desk with the PHOTO ENTRY FORM if the Teen desk is closed. Forms must accompany all photos. Sponsored by the John and Patricia Curran Teen Fund. Photos to be hung in the library in August.

Wilton Farmers’ Market
Wednesdays, June 24-September 30, 12-4 pm
Farm-fresh produce and fresh-baked breads and pies are just some of the offerings that are available to those who come to the new Wilton Farmers’ Market, in the back parking lot at Wilton Library. The market will be open each Wednesday through the summer, from 12-4 pm. The library and the Chamber of Commerce, along with town officials, have been hard at work to bring this dream to a reality. We’re up and running and want everyone to come and purchase locally grown fruits, vegetables, free range eggs, homemade jams, herbs, and fresh cut flowers along with fresh bread and pies. Our vendors include Wilton’s own Ambler Farm and Wave Hill Breads, Michele’s Pies, Killam & Bassette Farmstead, Schulze Farm, OLA Granola, Izzy B’s Allergen-Free Cupcakes, and Twombly Nursery. Additional vendors may be added throughout the summer as we get established, so continue to come by and check us out.

Teens Take Part:
Community Service and Art
Wednesday, July 8, 9:30 am-3:15 pm
Teens, ages 13 and up, spend a morning doing community service at Weir Farm National Historic Site. Participants will assist with the woodland edge management project and help clear a field. After a lunch break, every teen will be given an art pack and spend time sketching scenes around the farm. Finished pictures will be placed on exhibit at the Wilton Library. Transportation provided from Trackside. Buses leave at 9:30 am and return at 2:45 pm. Please bring a bag lunch and a blanket. Wear sturdy walking shoes and long pants. Gloves are provided. Crusty Crabs

Coastal Ecology

Children are invited to explore marine life with the Bruce Museum’s Brucemobile. Children in grades 3-5 are invited to a hands-on investigation of a tide-pool community, where they will be introduced to community structure and learn about food chains. Students observe and identify small, live, marine animals. Registration is required. Caregivers must remain in the building. Altered Books for Teens
Thursday, July 9, 4–6 pm
Teens entering grades 7-12 and recent HS graduates transform an old book into a new work of art! Using many different techniques such as sanding, painting, collaging, cutting and tearing, embellishing, and adhering, kids create a personalized “artist book.” Teens may bring in old books or use one of library’s. Teens are encouraged to bring any small personal photos or photocopies, and small treasures that have been saved (paper scraps, ticket stubs, buttons, earrings, coins, odds and ends). Makes a great journal or special gift for a friend! All basic materials will be supplied. Registration limited. Come to the WINRs Circle, a book group that discusses the 2010 Nutmeg nominees for kids in grades 4-6. CT’s Nutmeg Award encourages children to read literature selected by a panel of state librarians. The children choose their favorite book out of ten titles. Join members of the WINRs Circle (Wilton Intermediate Nutmeg Readers) in an informational, hands-on session about the work of an Occupational Therapist. Children’s Summer Chess
Wednesdays, July 15-August 19 , 4–5 pm
Christopher Potts returns as the scholastic chess instructor. For children in grades 3 – 7. Beginners will learn the history and rules of the game, basic themes and patterns, and basic strategies and tactics. Advanced students will review, learn more advanced strategies and tactics, and learn optimal opening and endgame play. Program fee is $60 per student for all six meetings, Wednesdays through August 19. In-person registration is required.

Wilton Domestic Violence Task Force Meeting

Please join members of the Wilton Domestic Violence Task Force to learn about the part they play in educating the Wilton community about the many types of Domestic Violence that occur in the community. The committee is composed of both community residents and professionals who deal with the educational, social, emotional and legal issues of domestic violence. Last month a meeting was held of interested teens and adults to discuss potential programs and activities for the coming year. On July 15, the group gathers again to discuss the scope of the problem (startling facts and figures will be presented) and make specific plans to build awareness for the coming year. Author Cynthia Lord gives a presentation about her Nutmeg Award-nominated book, Rules. She also discusses the writing process and shares illustrations from her brand new book, Hot Rod Hamster, which will be published in February 2010. All are welcome, especially children in grades 3-6. Submarine School
Wednesday, July 22, 11 am-12:30 pm
A real, working submarine will be arriving at the Library. Join inventor Alan Winick to learn all about the submarine, at 8 feet long, 6 feet high and 5 feet wide this little submarine is the perfect size to intrigue everyone, especially children in grades K-6. Children can truly see themselves exploring the ocean depths in this kid-sized contraption that is a real, working submarine, capable of diving to 300 feet below the surface. Mr. Winick will present a program about the submarine including the story of the construction of this childhood dream come true at 11:00 am, followed by a hands on activity displaying how Cartesian Divers work. The submarine will be in the Library parking lot until 5:00 pm so children can tour and explore it. Registration is necessary to attend Mr. Winick’s presentation and space is limited, no need to register to tour the submarine, please arrive by 4:30 so all children can have the opportunity to tour the sub. Exploring the Extremes with Richard Wiese

Emmy-winning TV-journalist, world-class explorer and scientist Richard Wiese has traveled to the highest, lowest, hottest, and coldest places on Earth and has learned how to survive in the extremes. In his expeditions, Richard has developed a treasure trove of techniques that apply not only to the world’s most rugged places but to one’s own backyard as well. In his talk, Richard speaks about how he applies his knowledge of surviving in the world’s most extreme climates to his life in Wilton along with some extraordinary discoveries he has made along the way. Drop-in Crafts for Teens
Thursday, July 30, noon–5 pm
Picture Frame Decorating for students entering grades 7 through high school and recent HS graduates. Teens transform a basic picture frame into a unique piece by using paints, tissue paper, magazine cutouts and other embellishments, then add their favorite picture inside. Drop by the teen room anytime between noon and 5:00 pm. Sponsored by the John and Patricia Curran Teen Fund.

Nathan Lewis

Weir Farm Artist-in-Residence, Nathan Lewis, discusses and displays his work from his July residency period at Weir Farm National Historic Site during a reception at the Wilton Library. Lewis is a narrative painter and installation artist, who received his MFA from Tufts University and the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. He is currently an Assistant Professor of Art at Sacred Heart University. Open to public. Registration suggested.

Tale of Despereaux (rated G) Tiny and graced with oversized ears, Despereaux was born too big for his little world. Refusing to live his life cowering, he befriends a Princess named Pea and learns to read (rather than eat) books — reveling in stories of knights, dragons and fair maidens. Banished from Mouseworld for being more man than mouse, Despereaux is rescued by another outcast, Roscuro, who also wants to hear the tales. But when the Princess dismisses Roscuro’s friendship, he becomes the ultimate rat and plots revenge with fellow outsider Mig. After Pea is kidnapped, Despereaux discovers he is the only one who can rescue her…and that even the tiniest mouse can find the courage of a knight in shining armor.
