New Perspectives Film Series: Young at Heart
Tuesday July 20, 7-8:30 pm
This film documents the true story of the final weeks of rehearsal for the Young at Heart Chorus in Northampton, MA, whose average age is 81, and many of whom must overcome health adversities to participate. Their music is unexpected, going against the stereotype of their age group, performing songs, for example, by James Brown, and Sonic Youth. Although they have toured Europe and sang for royalty, this account focuses on preparing new songs, not an easy endeavor, for a concert in their home town, which succeeds in spite of several very heart breaking events. As one Amazon reviewer, Rebecca Kyle, wrote in 2008, ‘They’ve discovered the joy of music and they’re passing it along to audiences everywhere. I promise you will both laugh and cry in this film. You may also be moved to try some new things. Music brings joy to many lives and it’s clearly never too late to get out there and try something new.’ Uplifting and moving, this film is a must-see for all ages! The New Perspectives Documentary series is programmed and moderated by local filmmaker, Megan Smith-Harris.
