Bill Warrington’s Last Chance

James King of Wilton will speak about his novel, Bill Warrington’s Last Chance, for which he received the 2009 Amazon Breakthrough Novel Award. Bill Warrington, recently diagnosed with Alzheimer’s, desires nothing more than to make things right with his long-estranged children before the disease takes its irrevocable toll. Using desperate and unconventional methods, he sets out west with his 15-year old granddaughter. The resulting tale is one of generations juxtaposed between coming of age and reaching old age, and family secrets revealed. Q&A following talk. With an exhibition titled ‘Get Real’, these two area artists present works in “realistic” terms. Mike Rafferty works in oils with seascapes, landscapes, still lifes and golf links. Christopher Iorillo is an illustrator that specializes in the use of high end 3D modeling and rending software. You have to see it to believe it…maybe. Exhibit runs through Wednesday, September 29. Class Registration and Placement Testing
Monday, September 13, 10–noon
Registration and placement testing for ESL classes take place at the Wilton Library on a walk-in basis. Additional sessions take place at Staples High School, 70 North Ave, Westport on Monday, September 13 or Thursday, September 16 from 7 – 9 p.m. Please note that the ESL class is for the intermediate to advanced level student. Class size is limited and will be determined by Placement Testing. Classes are open to both Wilton residents and those in surrounding communities. Class testing and registration will be conducted by Westport Continuing Education. The classes are part of Westport Continuing Education and will be held twice-weekly on Mondays and Wednesdays from 9/20 – 12/22 at the Wilton Library.

New Ways to Connect with Customers: Marketing 101 for Today

A series of seven programs to acquaint and update community businesses with the latest technology to promote their business is being offered through joint sponsorship by the Wilton Chamber of Commerce and the Wilton Library. Each program will feature a speaker for approximately one hour, followed by a Q&A.

Do-It-Yourself marketing is the new buzz word for small business. In today’s program, Remy Charmoz and Joe Watson of SegMark will share with us the little-known potential of web tools and the advantages of using the right tools and media to promote your business. During this opening session, we will review the importance of list management, the power of e-mail split-testing and dynamic content management, the interaction of digital publications, the simplicity of marketing portals, the freedom of content management websites and the best use of social marketing tools.

Coffee, tea, and breakfast pastries will be provided. Billed as the documentary version of The Breakfast Club, American Teen follows four high school students in Warsaw, Indiana from September of their senior year right up until graduation. This film is a fascinating snapshot of the frustrations of small town kids on the cusp of adulthood dealing with heartache, social hierarchy, the anxiety of scholarships and the other pressures on the American teen. Twice-weekly classes in English as a Second Language will be presented on Monday and Wednesday mornings from 9/20 – 12/22 at the Wilton Library by Westport Continuing Education, for both Wilton residents and those in surrounding communities. Wilton Library joins the nationwide activities to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Harper Lee’s beloved classic To Kill a Mockingbird. Event includes a visit from filmmaker and author Mary McDonagh Murphy, who recently published Scout, Atticus and Boo: A Celebration of Fifty Years of “To Kill a Mockingbird.” Best-selling author Wally Lamb (She’s Come Undone) will speak about the impact of Harper’s book on his life. September brings photographer Diana Greene to Weir Farm. She’s exhibited widely and won numerous awards for her photographs of people and land, reality and abstraction. In 2009, Diana began photographing digitally, which helped her tiptoe into the glorious world of color. She works using natural light to create images based on themes of anticipation, fragility and strength, and the mystery of personality. Children in grades 4-6 continue their dino club which meets once a week to discuss various topics including fossils, paleobiology, geology and more in preparation for the Paleo-Knowledge Bowl held by Peabody Museum. Grades 4-6 with caregiver in building. Facilitated by Darrell Fennell. REGISTRATION FILLED.

Writers WorkshopWilton Up Close—Photo/Writing Experience

Tuesday, 6-7:30 pm
REGISTRATION FULL! A photography and writing project for up to 25 students in grades 8 through 12 which will take place over two months for a total of approximately 16 hours on five different dates.
The dates are:

  • 9/28 – Kick Off
  • 10/5 – Photo/Writing
  • 10/19 – Photo/Writing
  • 10/26 – Photo/Writing
  • 11/10 – Selection of Photos

The students will be working with professional and award winning photographer, Daryl Hawk. He will help them get to the heart of the program – to unplug, slow down and explore the everyday landscape. To open their minds to discover what is right at their finger tips but see it in a way they have never seen before. They will capture these moments and pictures in photographs and writing. The project will conclude with a photographic and journalistic exhibit to share with the community, during Jan./Feb.

There will be a charge of $40. per student to cover the cost of framing three photographs for each student. The sign-up deadline is Friday Sept. 17th.

Arts for HealingArts for Healing: Staying “In Tune” with your Child

Arts for Healing serves the special needs population of children and adults living with communication disorders. Their mission is to break through barriers that isolate them, creating a channel for self-expression through the arts. This panel discussion will help parents understand the importance of the arts, play and aquatics in fostering emotional development in their children. It is through self awareness, confidence and personal growth, that academic learning can be most efficient, and potential ultimately reached. Facilitating the panel discussion is Dr. Jules Spotts, who holds a Ph.D. in Psychology. Panelists include:

  • Billy Ayres-Musical Theater Workshop Coordinator; Masters in Special Education and a B.S. in psychology;
  • Mary Newcomb-Art Therapist;
  • Karen Nisenson-M.M., M.A., MT-BC-Founder/Director of Arts for Healing; M.A. in Music Therapy from New York University;
  • Audrey Spellman-certified special educator and consultant with advanced training in the Developmental, Individual Difference, Relationship-based DIR®/Floortime approach.
  • Ailene Tisser-MA PT – pediatric physical therapist; developed an innovative aquatic therapy program, Therafins L.L.C. using the interactive play techniques of DIR®/Floortime in water therapy;

Co-sponsored by Arts for Healing, SPED*NET Wilton, Wilton Rotary Club, and Wilton Library. Registration suggested.
