Children in grades 1-7 are invited to join the Children’s Department’s Chess Club instructed by Christopher Potts. In this program, those brand new to chess will learn: the history and rules of the game; basic checkmate themes and patterns, basic strategy and tactics. Students to play games and put the lessons into practice. Program fee is $80 per student for all eight meetings, for children in grades 1-7. No session February 24. Kennedy and Marcel Duchamp, Emily Dickinson and Thomas Cole, John Keats and Asher B. Durand, Thomas Grey and John Martin, Alfred Lord Tennyson and Holman Hunt, William Carlos Williams and Charles Demuth, Wallace Stevens and Pablo Picasso, Lord Byron and J.M.W. Turner, Lawrence Ferlinghetti and Francisco Goya. An active in-class discussion of the poems and paintings will be encouraged. Copies of the poetry will be available at the Circulation Desk by February 24, 2011. No session March 24th . Donations welcomed. Registration essential.

computerlabWorking in Layers with Photoshop Elements

Without layers, Photoshop would be far less powerful. Understanding how to best use them is basic to becoming proficient in photo repair. Michael Franco will take you through the world of opacity, moving layers, hiding/showing, transparency, and more in this hands-on class. Basic computer skills, including mouse proficiency, are required. Class limited to ten students—advance registration required. To ensure the best learning experience for all, students are asked to arrive on time; no one will be permitted to enter classroom 10 minutes after the start of class. When the class is full, additional registrants will be added to a wait list. If any original registrants drop out, people from the wait list will be moved up to take the vacated spot.

Little PrincesAuthor Talk: Conor Grennan-Little Princes

An unlikely author tells an incredible story about the trafficked and conflict-displaced children of Nepal in his book, Little Princes. Volunteering in a 3-month stint at the Little Princes Children’s Home, he uncovered a much larger story that needed telling. He founded the non-profit organization, Next Generation Nepal to help reconnect children with their families. He shares his compelling journey and the children’s story. Twenty-two Westchester and Fairfield county artists have come together for this exhibition and to have fun with the theme. Most are creating new works, primarily paintings, just for this show. Some works of mixed media will also be presented. Subject matter is a variety of Pop Art, with homages to Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein, Peter Max, Robert Indiana, Jim Dine, Alex Katz, Jasper Johns, and others. Open to the public. The Way of Duty: A Woman and Her Family in Revolutionary America focuses on the effect war the Revolutionary War, had on one Connecticut woman, Mary Fish Silliman (1736–1818). In honor of Women’s History Month, Richard Buel will talk about the story of the book that he and his wife, Joy, wrote. March brings Xiomáro to the Weir Farm artist-in-residency program. . Xiomáro (see-oh-MAH-ro) is a well-rounded individual having pursued disciplines involving writing, arranging music, designing graphics, image development before turning to photography as his means of expression. Of his residency at Weir Farm, Xiomaro writes, ‘Inspired by the mathematical theories of Benoît Mandelbrot, I will be creating a series based on the Weir Farm pond to thematically capture the perception of fractal nuances under different environmental conditions just as Monet did with light in his haystacks.’ Co-sponsored by Weir Farm Art Center and Weir Farm National Historic Site and presented by Wilton Library. Poetry in Motion-Bridging the Gap is a two-performance, poetry and arts event created by teens in grades 7 through 12, centered on examining and understanding differences and ways to bring them together. Topics focus on age, gender, socio-economic, technological, religious, cultural, ethnicity and more. Receptions follow each evening’s performance. Books will be available for purchase. Tickets: $5.

aarpAARP Driver Safety Class

The AARP Driver Safety Program is a classroom course for drivers age 50 and older. This single session, four hour course covers the normal changes in vision, hearing and reaction time associated with ageing and provides practical techniques on how to adjust to these changes, along with learning to operate vehicles more safely in today’s increasingly challenging driving environment. There are no written or driving tests – classroom only. The class consists of both a morning and afternoon session – both sessions must be attended. The morning session is from 10:00AM – 12:00PM, followed by the afternoon session from 1- 3 pm Registration required. Program cost: $12 for AARP members; $14 for non-members. An upcoming exhibition, Masterworks: Jewels of the Collection will showcase some of the finest works of art from the museum’s collection while highlighting the stylistic diversity and relationships between different strands of Himalayan and neighboring cultural and artistic traditions. Oscar ‘Andy’ Hammerstein (Oscar II’s grandson) presents a multi-layered portrait of the Hammerstein legacy in his new book, The Hammersteins. He has studied and preserved the family’s heritage and their contribution to American culture and will share that insight with the audience. Q&A following the talk. Over the course of four lecture/discussions, Judson Scruton will explore some the relationships between poets and painters as W.H. Auden and Pieter Breughel the Elder, X.J. Kennedy and Marcel Duchamp, Emily Dickinson and Thomas Cole, John Keats and Asher B. Durand, Thomas Grey and John Martin, Alfred Lord Tennyson and Holman Hunt, William Carlos Williams and Charles Demuth, Wallace Stevens and Pablo Picasso, Lord Byron and J.M.W. Turner, Lawrence Ferlinghetti and Francisco Goya. An active in-class discussion of the poems and paintings will be encouraged. Copies of the poetry will be available at the Circulation Desk by February 24, 2011. No session March 24th . Donations welcomed. Registration essential.
