Beyond WordsBeyond Words-an Evening to Benefit Wilton Library

Friday, April 1, 7-11 pm
Wilton Library will hold its annual spring benefit, Beyond Words, where guests will enjoy a full and festive evening in transformed library spaces. The event will feature gourmet food prepared by four of the area’s best restaurants- Barcelona, Bon Appétit Café, Luca Ristorante Italiano and Schoolhouse at Cannondale, a live auction, a silent auction with a fun twist, dancing and more. The Wilton Bank is the event’s epic sponsor. Tickets range from $150 – $500 which may be purchased online, by phone (203-762-3950 ext. 216) or at the circulation desk. Proceeds benefit the library which in turn benefits the community.

Books for Babies will be held every first Saturday of the month from 9:30 to 10:00 am before the library opens for the public. In keeping with the Civil War Series of lectures sponsored by the Wilton Historical Society and the Wilton Library, the 14th Connecticut Regiment will hold an all-day encampment on the grounds of the Wilton Historical Society (224 Danbury Road, Wilton) from 10 am–4 pm In addition to the encampment, a midday talk on the Civil War by Wilton High School senior, Bryan Caswell, is scheduled.
The agenda for the day:

  • 11:00 a.m.–Military drills and firing demonstration;
  • 12:00 p.m.—Soldier lunch and camp life of the soldier;
  • 1:00 p.m.—Lecture – Bryan Caswell;
  • 2:00 p.m.—Military drills and firing demonstration.

Writers WorkshopAspects of Poetry: Discussion and Readings by Bill Ziegler

Bill Ziegler will discuss the elements of the genre. Having in mind Robert Frost’s observation that free verse is like playing tennis without a net, he will emphasize the significance of form. To illustrate his talking points, he will read relevant poems that he and others have written. April is National Poetry Month. Energy Challenge Workshop on Home Energy Audits

The Connecticut Neighbor to Neighbor Energy Challenge is a community energy savings program made possible by a $4.17 million Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant from the U.S. Department of Energy, funded as part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. Wilton Go Green is a proud partner of Neighbor to Neighbor. Their goal is to get 10 percent of Wilton residences to reduce energy consumption by 20 percent over the next three years – about 500 households! This is the first of two Energy Challenge Workshops about Home Energy Audits, sponsored by Wilton Go Green (www.wiltongogreen.org) and Wilton Library. Wilton Library Sleepover Mystery
Friday, April 8, 7 pm through Saturday, April 9, 9 am
Girls in grades 2-4 are invited to join us for our annual library sleepover. The theme this year, The Wilton Library Sleepover Mystery, is based on the timelessly popular Nancy Drew Mystery Stories. The girls will create art from fingerprints, make jewelry, crack codes, listen to spooky stories and play games including a “missing mystery” game. Drop off is at 7 pm on April 8 and all girls must be picked up from the library by 9 am on April 9. Parent volunteers needed. Evening snack and breakfast will be provided. Register in person, payment due upon registration. The program cost is $55 and all proceeds benefit the Children’s Library.

Bill McKibben is an American environmentalist and writer who frequently writes about global warming and alternative energy and advocates for more localized economies. In 2010 the Boston Globe called him ‘probably the nation’s leading environmentalist.’ He visits Wilton Library to share his most recent thoughts from his book, Eaarth: Making a Life on a Tough New Planet, giving some optimism and hope to a planet that has been ravaged. Girl Scouts Read!

Saturday April 30, 2-4 pm
Children are invited to stop by any time between 2-4pm and hear their favorite stories read by Girl Scouts from troop 50144. The girl scouts are holding a book drive to benefit three organizations: Wilton Library, Malta House, and Girl Scout Camp Aspetuck. Any new or gently used book donations are greatly appreciated!
