Daryl Hawk Distant Journeys Photography Retrospective Reception

International documentary photographer Daryl Hawk brings a new exhibit to Wilton Library. For the past twenty-five years, he has traveled alone to some of the most remote and isolated places in the world telling stories with his camera. Exhibit runs from through June 30. Bassist/composer Sean Smith, an international jazz musician, and the Sean Smith Quartet perform. Sean Smith’s dynamic working quartet includes Joel Frahm on the saxophones, John Hart at the guitar, Russell Meissner at the drums, and Smith at the bass. Reception following the concert. More advanced concepts in Photoshop Elements. How do I colorize that black and white photo? How do I put a different background behind Aunt Betty? Michael Franco will show you how to accomplish these goals in this hands-on class. Basic computer skills, including mouse proficiency, are required. Class limited to ten students—advance registration required. To ensure the best learning experience for all, students are asked to arrive on time; no one will be permitted to enter classroom 10 minutes after the start of class. When the class is full, additional registrants will be added to a wait list. If any original registrants drop out, people from the wait list will be moved up to take the vacated spot.

musicConnecticut’s Own: The Schubert Club of Fairfield County

Sunday, June 5, 4–5 pm
The Schubert Club of Fairfield County will perform in concert to celebrate their centennial with a special performance of operatic selections sung by duets, trios, quartets, and sextets. Selections include two sextets sung in Italian – one, Donizetti’s Lucia di Lammermoor, and the final sextet from Mozart’s Don Giovanni. Three quartets are planned, two by Schubert and the third from The Gondoliers by Gilbert & Sullivan, whose Three Little Maids from The Mikado will also be one of the four trios offered. Two duets from the irreverent P.D.Q. Bach will also ”insinuate” themselves into the program, so you can see, it will be an eclectic group of vocal ensembles with over 30 singers and several piano accompanists involved. Vocalists include: Jennifer Foster of Westport, Linnea Conley of Stamford, Richard Leslie of West Hartford, and from the ensemble, Kirsten Wieser-Scott from Norwalk and Patrice Fitzgerald from West Hartford. As the concluding concert of the fall/winter/spring season, the Schubert Club invites all attendees to a reception following the concert. Registration strongly suggested.

Dinosaur Club

This weekly club is seeking qualified students entering grades 4-6 to participate in a Science Competition at Yale University held annually in November. The club will explore dinosaurs, fossils, paleobiology, geology and more, through presentations, discussions and demonstrations. The program will include experiments, model building, field trips and hands-on creative activities.
This week’s activities: Make your own fossil and sedimentary rock experiment.
Parents are welcome to stay for a brief program overview during which we will provide details about the competition. Registration required.

Join Patrick J. Flaherty, an economist in the Connecticut Department of Labor’s Office of Research, where his responsibilities include occupational projections. In addition to providing an update on Connecticut employment trends, he will present industry and occupational projections, highlighting the fastest growing occupations. AARP Driver Safety Class

Saturday, June 11, 10 am-3 pm
The AARP Driver Safety Program is a classroom course for drivers age 50 and older. This single session, four hour course covers the normal changes in vision, hearing and reaction time associated with ageing and provides practical techniques on how to adjust to these changes, along with learning to operate vehicles more safely in today’s increasingly challenging driving environment. There are no written or driving tests – classroom only. The class consists of both a morning and afternoon session – both sessions must be attended. The morning session is from 10 am – noon, followed by the afternoon session from 1- 3 pm Registration required. Program cost: $12 for AARP members; $14 for non-members. Bring check or cash only to the morning session.

New Perspectives Film Series

WELCOME TO SHELBYVILLE
Saturday, June 18, 7:30-9:30 pm

A gripping documentary on what it means for a community to be American. The town of African-American and white residents are challenged with integrating the old guard with newer Latinos and an influx of Muslim-faith Somali refugees. WELCOME TO SHELBYVILLE explores immigrant integration and the interplay between race, religion and identity.  Q & A follows the film, led by Megan Smith-Harris with director/producer Kim A. Snyder. Executive produced by BeCause Foundation in association with Active Voice.  The film is being shown in conjunction with World Refugee Day, June 20th. This year’s Day marks the 60th anniversary of the United Nations Refugee Agency, which has worked to support the plight of more than 40 million uprooted people around the world. Summer Solstice Concert-Peter Madcat Ruth

American Red Cross Babysitting Training Part 1

Tales to Tails

ROAR’s (Ridgefield Operation Animal Rescue) Therapy Dog Program will be bringing therapy dogs to the library for children to read to them. The use of trained therapy dogs in reading programs can result in children who feel comfortable reading out loud, read more often, attempt more difficult books, and actually look forward to reading. As they improve their literacy skills, they’re not just learning how to read, they’re learning to love to read! Children must read independently to participate in this program. Registration is required.
