Teen Summer Reading Program
Monday, June 27
Read a book, record it on a personalized ‘passport,’ and be eligible to win weekly prizes and/or the grand prize! Come to the Teen Department Mondays-Fridays to sign up for a passport and begin reading. Program runs from June 27-August 7.

Dog Days of Summer Photo Contest for Teens
(1st Day of Submissions)
Friday, July 1
This summer, show us your awesome pet photos! Darling dogs, clever cats, goofy goldfish…if it’s a great pet photo, we want to see it! Photos must be 8′x10′ on photo paper. Drop off at the Wilton Library between Friday, July 1 and Wednesday, July 20, 2011.For teens entering grades 7-12 and recent high school graduates. One entry per person. Submission form must be filled out and included with photo at time of drop off. Forms are available at the front desk or online. Professional photographers, Peggy Garbus and Daryl Hawk, will judge and the photos will be on display throughout August. Prizes: Gift cards to Jerry’s Artarama for Best in Show, 2nd and 3rd place. Books for Babies

Come meet authors Holly LeCraw (The Swimming Pool) and Jane Roper (Eden Lake) with two terrific summer reads. Wanderings-Millstone Farm

Children ages 5 and up are invited to join the library for this puppet show of the classic children’s tale Jack and the Beanstalk presented by Michael Graham’s Spring Valley Puppet Theater. This production was awarded the 1994 Citation of Excellence in the Art of Puppetry from UNIMA-USA, the American Center of the Union Internationale de la Marionette. Registration required. Altered Books for Teens

Bring out your creativity and use paint, collage, stickers, ribbons, buttons and other materials to transform old books into personalized statements or artistic pieces. Children’s Beginner Chess
Thursday, July 28, 4-5 pm PROGRAM FILLED
Children in grades 1-7 are invited to join the Children’s Library Chess Club instructed by Christopher Potts. In this program, those brand new to chess will learn: the history and rules of the game; basic checkmate themes and patterns, basic strategy and tactics. Students will play games and put the lessons into practice. Program fee is $60 per student for all six meetings, for children in grades 1-7. In-person registration is required, payment due at time of registration.

Children’s Advanced Chess
Thursday, July 28, 5-6 pm PROGRAM FILLED
Children in grades 3-7 are invited to join the Children’s Library Chess Club instructed by Christopher Potts. In this program, more experienced players will: review the basics, learn more advanced strategies and tactics, learn optimal opening and endgame play, gain an appreciation for the vital importance of making and carrying out sound plans. Students will play games and put the lessons into practice. Program fee is $60 per student for all six meetings, for children in grades 3-7. In-person registration is required, payment due at time of registration.

Summer Music & More Concert Series-The Bernadettes

The Bernadettes perform their R&B, Motown, Soul, and Funk styles at Wilton Library for the first time in this final session of the concert series. Rain location: Brubeck Room. Tales to Tails
Saturday, July 30, 11-noon PROGRAM FULL
ROAR’s (Ridgefield Operation Animal Rescue) Therapy Dog Program will be bringing therapy dogs to the library for children to read to them. The use of trained therapy dogs in reading programs can result in children who feel comfortable reading out loud, read more often, attempt more difficult books, and actually look forward to reading. As they improve their literacy skills, they’re not just learning how to read, they’re learning to love to read! Children must read independently to participate in this program. Registration is required.
