Registration for the Launch of Wilton Up Close 2011 Teen Photography Project
Monday, August 15 through Tuesday, September 6.
Wilton Up Close 2011 is a Wilton Library project for students in grades 8-12. The students will work with Daryl Hawk, renowned photographer, who will teach them about photographing their surroundings. The heart of the program is to try and unplug, slow down and truly observe the everyday landscape. Students will also be asked to write reflections about their photographs and experience. The project will conclude with an exhibit in the main gallery of the Library in February 2012.

- 9/13-Wilton Town Center Kick Off Meeting/Photo/Writing, 4-6:30 pm, (Rain date 9/14);
- 9/27-Weir Farm Photo/Writing, 4-6 pm, (Rain date 10/4);
- 10/11-Millstone Farm Photo/Writing, 4- 6 pm, (Rain date 10/12);
- 11/1-Photo Selection, 5-8 pm; 12/6 or 12/7 – Attend one of these writing workshops, 5-7 pm;
- 1/10/12 or 1/11/12 – Attend one of these photo framing sessions, 5-7 pm.

The Literary Horse:
When Legends Come to Life Exhibition
Tuesday, August 30 through Thursday, September 29
Enjoy an exhibition of photographs by Vanessa Smith of horses and riders, paired with quotations from world-famous books, highlighting those published before 1923. Ms. Smith teaches equine photography and creative writing for horse lovers. The exhibition has been organized specifically to tour schools and libraries. Exhibit runs through Thursday, September 29.

Teddy Bear Picnic
Thursday, September 1, 11-11:30 am
Join us for teddy-bearific stories, songs and crafts. Bring your favorite Teddy Bear (or other stuffed animal). Juice and cookies will be served. Ages 3-5 years with parent/caregiver. Registration is required. Made possible by the Coyle Family Young Readers Fund.

The Structure of Social Instruction and Supporting Friendships:
Part I – Social Stories & Video Social Stories

This is a year-long instructional seminars and workshops series hosted by Michael Weiss, Ph.D., Consulting Developmental Psychologist, Adjunct Professor at Fairfield University and Director of Applied Developmental Analysis, LLC. Series addresses the needs of children with special needs — from AD/HD and learning disabilities to Asperger’s Syndrome and autism spectrum disorder — focusing on the ‘core spheres’ of differences in communication and social interaction and narrow ranges of actions and interests. Lego Club

Kids in grades 3 and up are invited to join this weekly Lego® Club. Each session will be based on a new theme such as castles, vehicles, towers and more. Children will learn about the theme through stories and non-fiction books and then create a Lego masterpiece from the library’s Lego collection. A great time for all! Author Talk: The Book That Changed My Life-Jeff Benedict

In POISONED – The True Story of the Deadly E. Coli Outbreak That Changed the Way Americans Eat, Jeff Benedict delivers a jarringly candid narrative of the fast-moving E. coli disaster in 1993. He explores victims and the culprits, from the families affected to the Jack in the Box executives. Jeff Benedict is an award-winning writer and is considered one of America’s top investigative journalists. He has published nine critically acclaimed books and is a columnist and feature writer for SI.com and a contributor to Sports Illustrated. His essays and articles have also appeared in the New York Times, Newsweek, the Los Angeles Times, and the Hartford Courant. He is a Distinguished Professor of English at Southern Virginia University, where he teaches Writing and Mass Media, a course he designed. Q&A following talk. New Perspectives Film Series: The September Issue

Organizing Kids ’n’ Keepsakes

Sentimental attachments make organizing keepsakes challenging. It seems to be even tougher when organizing kid’s keepsakes, like baby clothes, awards, school papers and craft projects. A panel of three FOCUS Organizers (Fairfield Organizers Creating Ultimate Solutions), members of NAPO, the National Association of Professional Organizers, will discuss strategies for meeting those challenges. This workshop is free but advance registration is highly recommended so that the presenters have enough workshop materials for everyone.

Breast Cancer Survivors’ Support Group

The Breast Cancer Survival Center, a Fairfield county non-profit, has been holding support groups, retreats and candle lightings for post-treatment survivors for the past 12 years. They have chosen Wilton Library as one of its meeting places over the next few months. Sandwiches, fruit and a beverage will be provided. Ambler Farm Reads

Children ages 4-6 are invited to join Wilton Library in a visit to Ambler Farm. Caregivers and children will meet at Ambler Farm to enjoy theme based stories as well as a nature walk. Children may check books out at the farm, so make sure to bring your library card! The program runs through November. From the design section of the show entitled “Designing Women,” to the plant specimens in the horticultural section, to the educational exhibits showing its support of education, civic involvement and conservation-the Club’s three major goals, there is something for everyone. The Seniors Garden Therapy Group (at Comstock) and the Girl Scouts are excited to be part of the flower show as well representing beneficiaries of the outreach program. There are free, scheduled lectures and demonstrations presented by the Club members on Friday and Saturday (September 16 and 17) during the flower show. Please check the schedule and register separately for each lecture/demonstration.

Children’s Beginner Chess

Children in grades 1-7 are invited to join the Children’s Library Chess Club instructed by Christopher Potts. In this program, those brand new to chess will learn: the history and rules of the game; basic checkmate themes and patterns, basic strategy and tactics. Students will play games and put the lessons into practice. Program fee is $80 per student for all eight sessions (September 15, 22, October 6, 13, 20, 27, Nov. 3, and 10). There is no session on September 29. In-person registration is required, payment due at time of registration.

Mythology Club for Kids

Children’s Author Elise Broach

Children of all ages are invited to meet author Elise Broach. Ms. Broach will share her love of writing with children in a fun, interactive format. She is the author of over ten picture books and novels for children and the recipient of several literature awards. Masterpiece, a 2012 Nutmeg nominee for the state of Connecticut, was voted Best Children’s Book of 2008 by Publisher’s Weekly as well as awarded the E.B. White Read Aloud Award by the Association of Booksellers for Children in 2009. Books will be for sale before and after her talk. Ms. Broach will be available for book signing following this event. Computer Class: Basic Facebook

Mary Anne Franco takes participants on a tour of Facebook, including how to sign up for an account, sharing status, finding friends, posting photos and privacy settings. This is a free, demonstration-style class and questions are encouraged. Registration encouraged.

The books will represent a smattering of what is out there. Sessions will consist of an overview of each book and the premise; general practical suggestion o how to apply the principles set forth in the book, and a Q&A period. Preparation for each session (e.g. reading the book) is not required but will most likely enhance the discussion and benefit of the session. The series will take place on the third Tuesday of alternating, months with the exception of January (9/20, 11/15, 1/10, 3/20, and 5/15). The book for September 20th is The Childhood Roots of Adult Happiness by Edward Hallowell. Registration strongly encouraged.

Newcomers Open House

The Newcomers Open House is open to new and prospective members of the Wilton Newcomers Club to see what the club and Wilton Library have to offer new residents. There is no need to register – just come to the Brubeck Room at the Library. Babysitting will be available in the upstairs Presidents’ Room, just off the elevator. Author Talk:
Linda Urbach-Madame Bovary’s Daughter
Wednesday, September 21, 7-8:30 pm
Join local author Linda Howard Urbach for a delightful evening as she discusses the creation, inspiration and research for Madame Bovary’s Daughter. She re-imagines the continuation of the classic tale, Madame Bovary, bringing an uncommon coming-of-age tale to life, replete with French fashion, tales of poverty and wealth. Actress, writer, teacher and friend E. Katherine Kerr will accompany Linda by reading excerpts from Madame Bovary’s Daughter. Linda is the originator of “MoMoirs -The Umbilical Cord Stops Here!” performed by members of the Theatre Artists Workshop (and presented here at Wilton Library in 2009), and she created and runs www.MoMoirs.com, Writing Workshops For & About Moms. Linda’s first book, Expecting Miracles, was published under the name Linda U. Howard and was later sold to Paramount Pictures. Her second novel, The Money Honey, was also published by Putnam. Candlelight Concerts opens its 64th season with a recital featuring Mozart’s Fantasy in C minor and Schumann’s Kreisleriana, performed by one of the preeminent concert artists of our time, Richard Goode. Gramophone Magazine calls his playing ”thrilling from first to last.” All performances are on Sunday afternoons at the Wilton Congregational Church located at 70 Ridgefield Road, Wilton. Weir Farm Artist-in-Residence Exhibition/Reception
Erica Harney
Monday, September 26, 6-7:30 pm
September brings Erica Harney to the Weir Farm artist in residency program. In addition to independent studio work, Harney has worked collaboratively with visual artists, musicians, writers, and choreographers. April 2011 welcomed her first-ever live drawing performance at the Pennsylvania State University, in tandem with musicians D. John Lemke and Jake Sustaita. This summer she begins a collaborative literary project with notable poet Keetje Kuipers. Erica Harney holds a BFA in Drawing and Painting from the New York State College of Ceramics at Alfred University, Magna Cum Laude (2006), and an MFA in Drawing and Painting from The Pennsylvania State University. She has also studied at the Santa Reparata International School of Art in Florence, Italy. Harney currently lives in Bellefonte, Pennsylvania, and is a Visiting Instructor of Art at The Pennsylvania State University’s main campus at University Park. Good Reads, Great Kids

How to Support Your Student’s Study Skills and Keep Your Sanity

Senior Center Book Discussion:
Selected Poems by Amy Clampitt

Judson Scruton will lead a discussion of Selected Poems by Amy Clampitt. Amy Clampitt published her first book of poetry, The Kingfisher, at the age of sixty-three. Four major collections were produced by her over the next eleven years. This book brings together poems from all five volumes. Her poetry encompasses everything from the experiences of modern life to the movement of wildflowers. Group meets 4th Tuesday of each month through May (except December).
