Lego Club

Wednesday, January 4, 11, 18 & 25, 4-5 pm
Kids in grades 3 and up are invited to join this weekly Lego® Club. Each session will be based on a new theme such as castles, vehicles, towers and more. Children will learn about the theme through stories and non-fiction books and then create a Lego masterpiece from the library’s Lego collection. A great time for all! There are 20 spots available for this program on a first come first serve basis. Tickets will be passed out at the Children’s reference desk starting at 3:45 pm the day of the program each week. This program runs for 4 weeks in January. Sponsored by the Coyle Family Young Readers.

River Road Gallery’s “Treasures” Opening Art Reception

Friday, January 6, 6-7:30 pm
River Road Gallery (Wilton) presents “Treasures” featuring the art of over 20 nationally acclaimed artists, including Anda Styler, Ming Feng, Ron Landis, Charles Wysocki, Lisa Joyce-Hill, Christopher Blossom, Yuri Tremler and Edward Gordon. The show will highlight some forty works of art including paintings, photographs and limited edition prints. The exhibition runs through Friday, January 27.

AARP Driver Safety Class

Saturday, January 7, 10 am-3 pm
This four hour AARP course covers the normal changes in vision, hearing and reaction time associated with ageing and provides practical techniques on how to adjust to these changes, along with learning to operate vehicles more safely in today’s increasingly challenging driving environment. There are no written or driving tests – classroom only. One hour break between morning and afternoon sessions. Both sessions must be attended. Registration required. Math Club for Kids

Children in grades 3-5 are invited to join Wilton High School students Rama Siripuram and Eric Li who will be hosting a math club program.  Children will have the chance to explore mathematical concepts in this fun, hands-on program.  The goal of the program is to prepare students for the Math Kangaroo competition, which takes place on March 15, 2012. See Wilton Library website for details on the club and Math Kangaroo. Math Club is free of charge; however, there is a $20 registration fee to join the competition.  Registration required for the club.  Competition registration will take place after the first meeting of the club.  This program meets every Saturday through March 10. Hot & Cool: Jazz at the Brubeck-Harvie S and James Weidman Duo

Sunday, January 8, 4-6 pm
Harvie S and James Weidman have been performing together as a duo to enthusiastic audiences at numerous venues throughout the U.S. Harvie S, award winning composer, arranger, bassist, educator and producer, performed at Wilton Library in March 2009 with the Virginia Mayhew Quartet. Pianist James Weidman has been a sideman and accompanist in many settings over the past 20 years, and increasingly is known for his being a bandleader and composer. Reception following the concert. CDs available for purchase and signing. Suggested donation: $10. Funded by William and Karen Tell Foundation with special thanks to Ed and Catherine Romer and Chris & Tish Brubeck. Parenting Book Series: Dr. Susan Bauerfeld

Dr. Susan Bauerfeld, a licensed clinical psychologist and mother of three boys, reviews several parenting books over the course of the year. The books will represent a smattering of what is out there. Sessions will consist of an overview, practical suggestions for applying the principles of each book, and a Q & A session based on the book. The series takes place on the third Tuesdays of alternating months, with the exception of January (1/10/12, 3/20, and 5/15). The book for January 10th is Mindset by Carol Dweck, Ph.D. Co-sponsored by Wilton Youth Council, Parent Connection, Wilton Library and United Way of Coastal Fairfield County. PTA Council’s Reflections Reception

A reception for the Wilton PTA Council’s Reflections program for the 2011-2012 season will be held in the Children’s Library. During the reception, screenings from the categories of dance/choreography, musical composition, and film/video production from Wilton students in grades K – 12 will be shown continuously on a large screen. Entries in photography and the visual arts (which includes art forms such as drawing, painting, print making, and collage) from Wilton students in grades K – 12 are on display in the Children’s Library through Wednesday, January 18. Author Talk: The Memory of All That – Katharine Weber

Thursday, January 12, 7-8:30 pm
The Memory Of All That: George Gershwin, Kay Swift, and My Family’s Legacy of Infidelities is Katharine Weber’s memoir of her extraordinary family. From her maternal grandmother’s affair with George Gershwin and her grandfather’s connections and feud with FDR, to her notorious father’s affairs and World War II propaganda films for which J. Edgar Hoover followed him for 40 years, including noting the author’s birth, Weber’s story is engaging. Other works by the author (in reverse order) are True Confections: A Novel, Triangle: A Novel, The Little Women: A Novel, The Music Lesson: A Novel, and Objects in Mirror Are Closer Than They Appear. Goodwives Rug Hookers Demonstration

Friday, January 13, 10 am-5 pm
Rug hooking is a traditional craft which has flourished in America since the early 1800s. The loops, or strips, of material are pulled up through a foundation fabric or backing. The Goodwives Rug Hookers, a group that has been together for over 28 years, will be in the Gallery, demonstrating the art/craft of rug hooking. People are encouraged to stop by and observe their process and the results of their labor of love.

Registration and placement testing for ESOL classes will take place at the Wilton Library on Wednesday, January 18th, from 9:30-11:30 am Please note that the daytime ESOL class at Wilton Library is for the intermediate to advanced level student. Class size is limited and will be determined by Placement Testing. Classes are open to Wilton, Westport, and Weston residents. Class testing and registration will be conducted by Westport Continuing Education. Just walk in to take the test; no registration required. The classes will be held twice-weekly on Mondays and Wednesdays from 9:30-11:30 am starting Monday, January 30 at Wilton Library. Placement testing is required.

Author Talk: Nina Sankovitch-Tolstoy And The Purple Chair

Nina Sankovitch has always been a avid reader, but after the death of her sister at age 46, she returned to her books for comfort and solace. She has continued to read and review books since her year of intense reading ended, resulting in writing her own book, Tolstoy and the Purple Chair: My Year of Magical Reading, which came out in June 2011. She shares her book reviews and maintains a dialogue with many readers through her blog. Please join local Westport reader/author Nina Sankovitch at the Wilton Library. Children’s Beginner Chess

Children in grades 1-7 are invited to join the Children’s Library Chess Club instructed by Christopher Potts, a US Chess Federation certified tournament director and scholastic chess instructor. In this program, those brand new to chess will learn: the history and rules of the game, basic checkmate themes and patterns, and basic strategy and tactics. Time will be provided for students to play games and put the classroom lessons into practice. Program fee is $80 per student for all eight meetings, for children in grades 1-7. Please note- chess will not meet on Thursday, February 23 due to winter vacation. In-person registration is required, payment due at time of registration.

Eat Right, Think Right, Live Right Workshop: Seema Dasani

Overcoming her own personal issues with weight and emotional eating, Seema presently uses her experience and expertise to help others achieve wellness across all key aspects of their lives. Most recently, in her role as Vice President of Wellness Programs at Eat Right America, Seema worked closely with all levels within Whole Foods Market to put together their global Health Starts Here initiative which is geared towards empowering people to eat right and live healthier lives. Weir Farm Artist-in-Residence Exhibition/Reception: Evelyn McCorristin-Peters

January brings Evelyn McCorristin-Peters to the Weir Farm artist in residency program. Evelyn states that her work evolves from a lifelong fascination with and dedication to the natural environment. Through color, light and unique composition, she creates an image to reflect the vitality of our extraordinary surroundings, providing the viewer a deeper understanding of the environment. Evelyn is originally from New Jersey and Delaware, and has now lived in the Sarasota/Manatee county area of Florida for over 25 years. She received a Bachelor’s Degree from the University of Delaware and has also attended The Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts and Ringling College of Art and Design. WLA/LWV-Reel Mondays: RESTREPO

Monday, January 23, 7-9:30 pm
RESTREPO is the second offering in a new series of quarterly, thought-provoking documentaries brought to you on Monday evenings by the League of Women Voters and Wilton Library. RESTREPO is a feature-length documentary that chronicles the deployment of a platoon of U.S. soldiers in Afghanistan’s Korengal Valley. The movie focuses on a remote 15-man outpost, ”Restrepo,” named after a platoon medic who was killed in action. The goal is to make viewers feel as if they have just been through a 90-minute deployment. This is war, full stop. The conclusions are up to you. Remaining films in the series: MISS REPRESENTATION on March 12, 2012; DIVE! on July 16, 2012. Discussion following the film led by David Graybill. Refreshments served. Senior Center Book Discussion: This Side of Paradise

Busting the Cholesterol Myth-Does Cholesterol Cause Heart Disease?

In a second of a series of talks at Wilton Library, Dr. Robert Zembroski (or Dr. ‘Z’, as he is also known), talks about cholesterol and heart disease. Topics include: Cholesterol is not the cause of Coronary Artery Disease (CAD); the damaging effects of cholesterol-lowering drugs; the diet proven to reverse heart disease; certain nutrients that prevent CAD; biomarkers to look for to accurately assess risk for CAD. Dr. Robert Zembroski, is director of the Darien Center for Integrative Medicine. A graduate of the University of Connecticut and the New York Chiropractic College, Dr. Z is a chiropractic neurologist certified by the American Chiropractic Neurology Board. Home Energy Savings Workshop

Preventing Ice Dams

Wilton Library hosts a free Home Energy Savings Workshop, co-sponsored by the Neighbor to Neighbor Energy Challenge and Wilton Go Green. This workshop focuses primarily on ‘ice dams’ and preventive measures to take to reduce the likelihood of having to deal with them. Members of the Board of Selectmen take part in a panel. Energy Solutions technicians will be present to answer questions and schedule HES visits. If an HES visit has been completed, call HES at (860) 372-4405. Registration is required for this event. Jolene Mullen is a professional researcher specializing in lineage research for heritage societies. She works in Connecticut and the eastern counties of New York, in the New York and Connecticut state libraries/archives, and other repositories and states as necessary. Research methodology, record groups (genealogical data to look for and where to find them) and useful internet sites (both subscription and free) will be discussed. Free handouts. ROAR’s (Ridgefield Operation Animal Rescue) Therapy Dog Program will be bringing therapy dogs to the library for children to read to them. The use of trained therapy dogs in reading programs can result in children who feel comfortable reading out loud, read more often, attempt more difficult books, and actually look forward to reading. Children must read independently to participate in this program. Registration is required.

Gooney Bird Green and Her True Life Adventures

Children ages 4 and up are invited to a performance of Gooney Bird Greene. The Wilton High School Little Theatre Company will entertain kids with this classic story by award winning author Lois Lowry. After the performance children can ask questions and receive autographs from the performers! In blending funny and memorable characters with colorful details and her distinctive flair for suspense, Gooney Bird awakens the classmates’ dormant imaginations. They come to realize their lives are as unique as Gooney Bird’s and that they, too, can cast themselves as the heroes in their own true tales of discovery and adventure. Registration required. New Perspectives Film Series:

LOST BOHEMIA with Director Josef Astor

A little known world of Carnegie Hall and its illustrious artists is discovered in this documentary by Josef Birdman Astor. A tenant in one of the 160 studios on top of Carnegie Hall, Astor captured his artist neighbors, a rapidly vanishing world from 1985. Astor’s film follows the protracted battle by the tenants to preserve their community and the rich heritage of the studios. The studio’s significance to 20th Century culture cannot be overstated, as generations of legendary performers and artists lived and worked in them including Isadora Duncan, Marlon Brando, Barnett Newman, Agnes deMille, Marilyn Monroe, Leonard Bernstein, Ruth Gordon, Mark Twain, Martha Graham, Paddy Chayefsky, Robert Redford and Lee Strasberg. Director Josef Birdman Astor joins Megan Smith-Harris for a discussion following the film. Suggested donation of $5. Refreshments served. Please note: this lecture will be held at the Wilton Historical Society, 224 Danbury Road, Wilton.   The collaboration between the Wilton Library and the Wilton Historical Society kicks off its 5th season with the American Civil War Series, Part II-A Connecticut Focus.  Matthew Warshauer, Professor of History at Central Connecticut State University, speaks on the subject of his recently published book, Connecticut in the American Civil War: Slavery, Sacrifice, and Survival, which offers readers a remarkable window into the state’s involvement in a conflict that challenged and defined the unity of a nation. The arc of the war is traced through the many facets and stories of battlefield, home front, and factory.  Matthew Warshauer received his B.A. in history from Central Connecticut State University in 1990. He completed his M.A. (1993) and Ph.D. (1997) in American Studies at Saint Louis University. He joined the faculty at CCSU in the fall of 1997, and has served as editor of Connecticut History since 2003. Author Talk: Mahru Ghashghaei and Susan Snyder-Nine Rubies

Through a friendship that began in 1990, a collaboration created the book, Nine Rubies, stories from deep within Mahru’s memory. The book captures the personal experiences that are were impacted by a shifting political Iran, often influenced by covert American political and economic interventions.
