Fur, Fins and Feathers

Saturday, April 14, 3-4 pm
Fur, Fins, and Feathers is the newest WLA book club for kids in grades 4 through 6. On the second Saturday of each month, we will focus on a book, classic or contemporary, about animals. This month’s selection is White Star: A Dog on the Titanic by Marty Crisp. Sam, a young passenger, and Star, a smart and energetic Irish setter, struggle to survive the sinking of the great ocean liner exactly one hundred years ago this month. This thrilling tale was a recent Intermediate Nutmeg Nominee. Club includes discussion, snacks, and activities. Come with a friend or make a new one. There is no charge, but registration is required. This program is sponsored by the Coyle Family Young Readers Fund.

New Perspectives Film Series:

Herb & Dorothy
Saturday, April 14, 7:30-9:30 pm
HERB & DOROTHY tells the extraordinary story of Herbert Vogel, a postal clerk, and Dorothy Vogel, a librarian, who managed to build one of the most important contemporary art collections in history with very modest means. From the early 1960s, they began collecting works from what became world-renowned painters including Sol LeWitt, Christo and Jeanne-Claude, Chuck Close, Robert and Sylvia Plimack Mangold, and Lawrence Weiner. After 30 years of and more than 2,000 pieces stored in their one-bedroom Manhattan apartment, they gave almost their entire collection to the National Gallery of Art in Washington, DC. HERB & DOROTHY is directed by first time filmmaker Megumi Sasaki. The film received the Golden Starfish Award for the Best Documentary Film and Audience Award from the 2008 Hamptons International Film Festival. Suggested donation of $5. Refreshments served. The New Perspectives Documentary series is programmed and moderated by Ms. Smith-Harris. Registration highly recommended.
