Children’s Beginner Chess

Thursday, April 26 through Thursday, June 14, 4-5 pm
Children in grades 1-7 are invited to join the Children’s Library Chess Club instructed by Christopher Potts, a US Chess Federation certified tournament director and scholastic chess instructor. In this program, those brand new to chess will learn: the history and rules of the game, basic checkmate themes and patterns, and basic strategy and tactics. Time will be provided for students to play games and put the classroom lessons into practice. Program fee is $80 per student for all eight meetings, for children in grades 1-7. Registration required.

Children’s Advanced Chess

Thursday, April 26 through Thursday, June 14, 5-6 pm
Children in grades 3-7 are invited to join the Children’s Library Chess Club instructed by Christopher Potts, a US Chess Federation certified tournament director and scholastic chess instructor. In this program, more advanced students will review the basics, learn more advanced strategy and tactics, learn optimal opening and endgame play, and gain an appreciation for the vital importance of making and carrying out sound plans. Time will be provided for students to play games and put the classroom lessons into practice. Program fee is $80 per student for all eight meetings, for children in grades 3-7. Registration required.

Ben Van Vechten Seminar – Literary Salmagundi 2012

Ben Van Vechten returns to the Wilton Library for a special 2-day seminar with discussions on selections of his choosing. Copies of the selections will be available at the front desk before the seminar begins. This program is made possible through the generosity of an anonymous donor. Advance registration is required.

Author Talk: Jack Cavanaugh: Season of ’42

Wilton Library welcomes back veteran sportswriter and Wiltonian Jack Cavanaugh to discuss his latest book, Season of ’42: Joe D., Teddy Ballgame, and Baseball’s Fight to Survive a Turbulent First Year of War, about this historic baseball season, how it was shaped and affected by the war and what, ultimately, it meant to America. Jack Cavanaugh’s work has appeared most notably on the sports pages of The New York Times, for which he has covered hundreds of assignments.  He is the author of The Gipper (2010), Giants Among Men (2008) and Tunney (2006), which was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize in biography. Cavanaugh is currently a professor at the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism and an adjunct professor at Quinnipiac University.  He is the author of Giants Among Men (2008) and Tunney (2006), which was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize in biography.
