Children’s Beginner Chess

Thursday, April 26 through Thursday, June 14, 4-5 pm
Children in grades 1-7 are invited to join the Children’s Library Chess Club instructed by Christopher Potts, a US Chess Federation certified tournament director and scholastic chess instructor. In this program, those brand new to chess will learn: the history and rules of the game, basic checkmate themes and patterns, and basic strategy and tactics. Time will be provided for students to play games and put the classroom lessons into practice. Program fee is $80 per student for all eight meetings, for children in grades 1-7. Registration required.

Children’s Advanced Chess

Thursday, April 26 through Thursday, June 14, 5-6 pm
Children in grades 3-7 are invited to join the Children’s Library Chess Club instructed by Christopher Potts, a US Chess Federation certified tournament director and scholastic chess instructor. In this program, more advanced students will review the basics, learn more advanced strategy and tactics, learn optimal opening and endgame play, and gain an appreciation for the vital importance of making and carrying out sound plans. Time will be provided for students to play games and put the classroom lessons into practice. Program fee is $80 per student for all eight meetings, for children in grades 3-7. Registration required.

Wilson Avenue Loft Artists “Words Matter” Art Exhibition Reception

Friday, June 1, 6 – 7:30 pm.
The June exhibition features 15 artists from the Wilson Avenue Loft Artists group, entitled “Words Matter.” The artists are Britt Bair – Darien, Randi Jane Davis – Ridgefield, Lori Glavin – Darien, Hanneke Goedkoop – Rowayton, Dana Goodfellow – Darien, Ruth Ipe –Wilton, Pamela Lindberg – Darien, Mary Manning – Darien, Nancy McTague–Stock – Wilton, Claudia Mengel – Westport, Elise Mills – Ridgefield, Grace Shanley – Rowayton, Vicki French Smith – Darien, Susan Cutler Tremaine – New Canaan, and Diane Weeks – Darien. Each artist will bring her own unique interpretation of the theme to the exhibit. While many works will include words or letter forms, others are influenced by poetry or prose. The artists work in various media including oils and acrylic, drawings, collage, printmaking and mixed media. Public is invited. Exhibit runs through Friday, June 29th. A portion of the proceeds benefits the library.
