Further Poetic Excursions with Judson Scruton

Thursday, Nov. 1, 8, 15 & 29, 10:30 a.m. – noon.
Judson Scruton leads this 4-part Poetry Series exploring poems with a connection to the months of November & December. Poems will be chosen from both contemporary and classical English and American poets including poems in English translation. Poetry packet will be available at the front desk one week before the series begins. Advance registration required.

Mother Goose Time

Thursday, Nov. 8, 15, 29, 1:30 – 2 p.m.
Mother Goose Time is a themed story time for children ages 1-4. Children will sing songs, listen to stories, move to music, and learn nursery rhymes. Felt boards, puppets, instruments, and props will be used.

Children’s Beginner Chess

Thursday, Oct. 4 through Thursday, Nov. 29, 4 – 5 p.m.
Children in grades 1-7 will get beginner chess instruction from Christopher Potts, an instructor, tournament player and US Chess Federation certified tournament director. In this program, new players will learn: the history and rules of the game; basic checkmate themes and patterns; basic strategy and tactics. Time will be provided for students to play games and put the classroom lessons into practice. Program fee is $80 per student for all eight meetings. Please note- no class on Thursday, Nov. 22 for Thanksgiving. In-person registration is required, payment due at time of registration.

Introduction to Knitting for Teens

Thursday, Nov. 15, 4 – 5:30 p.m.
Teens in grades 6-12 are invited to participate in this interactive workshop where they will learn introductory knitting techniques of casting on, the knit stitch, the purl stitch, and binding off. Materials will be provided. Shirley Spencer, President of the Candlewood Valley Knitting Guild, will lead the workshop. In addition to teaching, Ms. Spencer designs and writes knitting patterns. Registration required.

Children’s Advanced Chess

Thursday, Oct. 4 through Thursday, Nov. 29, 5 – 6 p.m.

Weir Farm Artist-in-Residence Exhibition/Reception: Peter Liashkov

Thursday, Nov. 15 , 6 – 7:30 p.m.

November brings Peter Liashkov to the Weir Farm artist in residency program. Continuing his exploration of American themes, Peter will fabricate a quilt out of 12” squares of tough synthetic fabric. Using a reprographic process, he will print on the squares a combination of landscape imagery borrowed from idealized 19th Century engravings of landmarks and vistas of Connecticut and his own photographs of urban and rural surroundings, taken at sites around Weir Farm. Co-sponsored by Weir Farm Art Center and Weir Farm National Historic Site and presented by Wilton Library.  Registration suggested. Please note the change of date for this one artist.

Ambler Farm Goes to the Punkin Chunkin World Championship!

Thursday, Nov. 15 , 6:30 – 7:30 p.m.

Ambler Farm has entered a trebuchet in the Youth 17 and Under Division to compete in the world championships to throw a pumpkin the farthest in Delaware. Come hear about the team and celebrate the amazing story of their journey to the event and the event itself. The program consists of team member presentations, short video segments and a question and answer period. It’s an amazing story to hear how an extraordinary goal can become a reality. The Punkin Chunkin World Championships will be aired on Thanksgiving night on the Discovery Channel. Sponsored by Ambler Farm. All ages.
