Aspects of the Short Story with Bill Ziegler *POSTPONED – DATE TBD*

Thursday, March 7, 14, 21 & 28, 10:30 – noon.
Bill Ziegler will again lead his popular four-part series of short stories on March 7, 14, 21 and 28. Participants read and discuss a variety of short stories that illustrate the characteristics of the genre and provide a basis for critical evaluation. The stories will be available at the circulation desk before the seminar begins. Advance registration is required.

Children’s Beginner Chess

Thursday, Feb. 7 through Thursday, March 28, 4 – 5 p.m.
Children in grades 1-7 will get beginner chess instruction from Christopher Potts, an instructor, tournament player and US Chess Federation certified tournament director. In this program, new players will learn: the history and rules of the game; basic checkmate themes and patterns; basic strategy and tactics. Time will be provided for students to play games and put the classroom lessons into practice. Program fee is $80 per student for all eight meetings. Registration filled.

The Hobbit: The Game

Thursday, March 7, 4 – 5 p.m.
Saddle your pony and sharpen your battleaxe — it’s time for tabletop adventure! Armed with imaginations as large as Middle Earth, participants will play the parts of Bilbo Baggins, Thorin Oakenshield or one of the dozen dwarves in pencil-and-paper role play action. Reenact the journeys of Bilbo and company, or go ‘off-map’ entirely and blaze your own trail. Add in Bombur-sized snacks and you have all the ingredients for a tale that the bards will tell for an Age. Just remember to steer clear of cobwebs, and if a troll asks you to stay for lunch, say “no!” Grades 4-6 with a caregiver in the building. Registration required. Time will be provided for students to play games and put the classroom lessons into practice. Program fee is $80 per student for all eight meetings. Registration filled.
