Mother Goose on the Loose

Thursday, Sept. 12 through Thursday, Nov. 14, 10:15 – 10:45 a.m.
Mother Goose on the Loose is a themed story time for children ages 6 months to 2 years old. Children will sing songs, listen to stories, move to music, and learn nursery rhymes. Mother Goose on the Loose is a research-based program intended to help infants and toddlers develop early literacy skills in an active and fun environment. Felt boards, puppets, instruments, and props will be used. **Please note—in an effort to create a small, consistent group experience, this program uses a lottery system for registration. Lottery registration forms are available at the Children’s Library desk and must be returned by August 23. Patrons will be notified via email if they receive a spot.

Fall Poetry with Judson Scruton

Thursday, Oct. 31, 10:30 – noon.
Judson Scruton leads this 4-part Fall Poetry Series exploring various poets and their writing techniques on Oct. 31, Nov. 7, 14 and 21. Judson Scruton, M.A (The Johns Hopkins University, The Writing Seminars, specializing in poetry), has taught creative writing and literature at prep schools and universities. He is currently an Adjunct Professor of English at Fairfield University. See library’s registration link for speaker details. Poetry packet available at front desk before seminar begins. Children’s Beginner Chess

Thursday, Oct. 3 through Thursday, Nov. 21, 4 – 5 p.m.
Children in grades 1-7 will get beginner chess instruction from Christopher Potts, an instructor, tournament player and US Chess Federation certified tournament director.  In this program, new players will learn: the history and rules of the game; basic checkmate themes and patterns; basic strategy and tactics. Time will be provided for students to play games and put the classroom lessons into practice.  Program fee is $80 per student for all eight meetings. In-person registration is required, payment due at time of registration.

Children’s Advanced Chess

Thursday, Oct. 3 through Thursday, Nov. 21, 5 – 6 p.m. CANCELLED
Children in grades 3-7 will get beginner chess instruction from Christopher Potts, an instructor, tournament player and US Chess Federation certified tournament director.  In this program, advanced players will: review the basics; learn more advanced strategy and tactics; learn optimal opening and endgame play; gain an appreciation for the vital importance of making and carrying out sound plans. Time will be provided for students to play games and put the classroom lessons into practice.  Program fee is $80 per student for all eight meetings. In-person registration is required, payment due at time of registration.
