Policies
Use of Library Facilities

The Wilton Library subscribes to Article IV of the Library Bill of Rights, which states that facilities should be made available to the public served by the given library on an equitable basis, regardless of beliefs or affiliations of individuals or groups requesting their use. The use of Library facilities by both commercial entities and non-profit organizations shall be governed by the following policies and procedures:

  • The Wilton Library maintains its facilities primarily for library-related programs. These programs may be sponsored or co-sponsored by the Library in order to further its mission to provide educational, informational, and recreational opportunities for the community.

  • When the spaces are not needed for library-related programs, they may be rented by community organizations and companies, provided that the application for use is made in writing and approved by the Library. The Library reserves the right to seek references for any group before reserving space.

  • Use of Library space by groups and businesses should not interfere with the ongoing delivery of Library programs and services. Should an applicant's use of the Library space be determined by the Library to be potentially disruptive, the application for use may be denied. A group's use of Library facilities does not in any way imply endorsement of the group's policies or beliefs by the Library.

  • Groups and businesses may use Library facilities for business or organizational meetings. No admission may be charged and no products or services may be advertised, solicited, or sold without the express written consent of the Library Director. Groups using Library space may not imply that their programs are sponsored, co-sponsored or approved by the Library.

  • It is the responsibility of the group or business using Library facilities to restrict entry to the program or meeting they conduct, if such restriction is deemed by the group or business to be appropriate.

  • All applications must name an adult responsible for the housekeeping and security of the Library space and for payment of the rental fee. Adequate adult supervision (as defined in advance by the Library) must be provided when the space is used by children and/or teens.

  • Library staff will set up tables, chairs and other equipment as requested in the applicant's reservation form. Applicants are responsible for leaving space in a clean and orderly condition. Time required by groups to set up or clean up will be considered part of the total contract time and will be billed accordingly. Storage of materials before or after the reserved time is prohibited. The Library will not be responsible for equipment, supplies, exhibit materials, or any other items owned by an individual or group used in the Library. The Library can provide audiovisual equipment as requested, subject to availability.

  • Library equipment and/or furnishings damaged during use will be repaired or replaced immediately by the Library and the full cost of such repairs or replacement borne by the individual or group responsible.

  • All groups or individuals authorized to use Library facilities are required to furnish proper police and fire supervision for traffic and safety purposes. Applicants must apply to the police/and or fire marshal when their use of the space warrants this supervision and provide written notification to the Library of the satisfactory result of such application. Groups and individuals using Library space may be required to furnish an insurance certificate to guarantee liability and other coverage.

  • Any groups violating these policies and procedures or those set out in the Library Code of Conduct may be asked to leave and/or denied future use of the facilities.
