The buzz is already out for the American remake of the Swedish film, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, which will be out in theaters in December. Get ready by watching the original Swedish trilogy, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, The Girl who Played with Fire, and the The Girl who Kicked the Hornet’s Nest. All are available on DVD here at the library!

While you are waiting for the new crop of Oscar-nominated foreign language films to come out on DVD, I suggest another foreign film to fill the gap, Hula Girls! Best Picture winner of the Japanese Academy Awards in 2007, Hula Girls is a wonderful film. Based on the true story of a town in Japan in the 1960’s struggling with the closure of the town’s main employer, the local coal mine. The coal company comes up with an idea for a new industry, that of a Hawaiian theme park to draw tourists. The coal miners’ daughters are enlisted to become hula dancers and train under a quirky dance instructor imported from Tokyo. Funny, sad, and heartwarming, this film has it all!

We have recently purchased several great new foreign films. Don’t miss them!


	Once Upon a Time in Mumbai Set in Mumbai in 1970, this film follows the rise and fall of a notorious gangster.

Get ready for the second installment of Stieg Larsson’s Millennium Trilogy on DVD! If you enjoyed The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo you will love the second exciting thriller in the series. Roomi Rapace stars as the intriguing Lisbeth Salander, an unusal hacker with a mysterious past. Landing as the prime suspect in a murder case, Mikael Blomkvist must unearth her past as well as find the real murderer before time runs out for Lisbeth. The Girl Who Played with Fire comes out on DVD on Tuesday, October 26.

The 2009 Academy Award-winning film in the Foreign Language category is here! This thriller takes place in Argentina, jumping back and forth from the 1970s to the present time. The main character Benjamin, a former employee of the criminal court, decides to write a novel about an unsolved murder that has haunted him for years. His research into the crime leads to a reunion with Irene, a fomer colleague and object of unrequited love. Find out why the critics have been raving about this film. The Secret in their Eyes will be released on DVD on Tuesday, September 21.

It’s Not Brand New, But It’s Great

Although Broken Embraces was released on DVD in March, it is still considered a “new” movie and should not be missed. Starring the incomparable Penelope Cruz and directed by one of Spain’s foremost talents, Pedro Almodovar, this film has many layers, many time frames, and many thought-provoking moments. The story begins with a blind screenplay writer who hears of the death of an old enemy. The enemy was the former lover of the writer’s former lover. Confused? The confusion unwinds as the story unfolds, taking us back and forth in time. The acting is wonderful, the story is well-constructed, and the visuals are striking. Those of you who have seen Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown will enjoy references to that film. If you enjoy good foreign films you can’t miss this one.

Coco Before Chanel was released on DVD this week. Starring Audrey Tatou (of Amelie fame), this film details the life of Gabrielle (Coco) Chanel beginning with her childhood in an orphanage. First skirting society by being a singer in a nightclub, Coco later developed relationships with wealthy friends and lovers. This fascinating film reveals the origins of Coco’s fashion sense as a young woman and how her personal style changed the way women dressed. This film is in French with English subtitles.

A Family-Friendly Movie

If you are looking for a good movie with a great message check out Like Stars on Earth (Taare Zameen Par). This Hindi language film is the story of a boy named Ishaan who constantly gets into trouble at home and at school. No one understands his behavior and seeming lack of interest in his education until a new art teacher discovers the root of Ishaan’s problem. This is not your typical Bollywood film filled with song and dance, it is a heartwarming movie about the power of teachers who care about their students and the challenges that children with learning disabilities face every day. The DVD will be available on Tuesday, January 12!

Look no further than Absurdistan. Set in an imaginary village, this Russian-language film is whimsical and farcical. When the pipe that brings water to the town falls into disrepair, the men ignore the problem. The women must resort to extreme measures to motivate the men into action.

Foreign Language DVDs

In case you haven’t noticed, we have a large selection of foreign language DVDs. They are shelved after the rest of the feature films and have a purple sticker on the spine. Here are some new and notable titles:

I’ve Loved You So Long

This film features the amazing Kristin Scott Thomas speaking French. Maureen in the Children’s Library recommended this, saying it is a winner.

Delhi-6

This Bollywood film takes place in current-day Delhi (well, obviously). It is the story of a young man who returns to his family’s home with his aging grandmother. Themes of family, community, religion, and love are explored in this fun and offbeat movie.

Cherry Blossoms

In German and Japanese, this dramatic film tells the story of a man who learns of his wife’s dream to visit Japan only after she passes away. In an attempt to understand the wife he didn’t fully know, he decides to fulfill her dream.
