August is typically not a big release month in movieland, but there are several great films that we will be receiving throughout the month. Some indie films, some foreign films, some documentaries, and of course, some blockbusters. Here’s a peek at what’s coming up:
Featuring Wilton native Paul Dano, Zooey Deschanel, John Goodman, and Ed Asner. Dano plays a mattress salesman, whose life is changed upon the arrival of Deschanel in his store. Quirky plot elements such as the adoption of a baby from China, a strange assailant, and a eccentric millionaire give the film an indie flair.
This French film focuses on one Jewish family dealing with the Holocaust in their own personal ways a generation after World War II. The New York Times reviewer, A.O. Scott says, “One Day You’ll Understand contains no great revelations or surprises, but rather is suffused with a quiet glow of sympathy and enlightenment. Its narrow scope and calm demeanor are signs of its seriousness and integrity.”
An Oscar nominated and Sundance award-winning documentary about Hurricane Katrina. Filmed by aspiring rap artist, Kimberly Roberts, with her home video camera; this film was shot before, during, and after Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans. Roger Ebert says, “Her footage is surrounded by professionally filmed material that deepens and explains what happened. But the eyewitness footage has a desperate urgency that surpasses any other news and doc footage I have seen.”
This buddy movie/romantic comedy stars Paul Rudd and Jason Segel. Rudd plays Peter, who realizes that he doesn’t have a close male friend to be his best man at his upcoming wedding. Hilarity ensues as Peter searches for the perfect best friend and finds Syndney (Segel).
