This summer seems to be full of action films and family films, if you are looking for something different The Conspirator may be for you. Directed by Robert Redford and starring Robin Wright, James McAvoy, Kevin Kline, and Tom Wilkinson, The Conspirator tells the story of the trial of Mary Surratt, who was accused of conspiring to kill president Lincoln. Based on thorough research, this historical drama brings to life the Civil War era. Wright stars as Mary Surratt, an owner of a boardinghouse and the mother of of one of the men who helped kill Abraham Lincoln. Her son has vanished after the assassination, leaving the government to assume that she must have known of the plot being hatched in her home by boarders and John Wilkes Booth. McAvoy plays a young lawyer named Frederick Aiken, who is handed the job of defending her and fully believes in her guilt, as does everyone else. Find out what happens (if you don’t remember from studying American History) as the tribunal proceeds and the idea of bending the Constitution comes into question. The Conspirator comes out on DVD on August 16.
