sherlockIt’s not Robert Downey Jr or Jeremy Brett, it’s a whole new take on Sherlock Holmes.  A collaboration between the BBC and Masterpiece Theatre, Sherlock is a wonderful reimagining of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s characters.  Set in present-day London, Holmes is a restless man who is a “consulting detective” for the police.  Through a mutual friend, he becomes roommates with Dr. John Watson, who has recently returned from army duties in the Middle East.  The main characters from the classic stories live in the modern world in this fast-paced, clever, and thoroughly enjoyable TV series.  Reserve Sherlock: Season One today!

saltLooking for an action-packed thriller starring a gorgeous woman?  Look no further!  Salt stars Angelina Jolie as a CIA operative who is accused of being a double agent for Russia.  Watch as she beats up bad guys and escapes from impossible situations in this thrill-a-minute movie. Roger Ebert says, “Jolie’s character, Evelyn Salt, makes it look as though Run Lola Run was about walking.”   Salt comes out on DVD on December 21.

Does money ever sleep?

wall-StreetIn this era of financial meltdowns, a film about Wall Street is rather appropriate.  Revisit the greed of the 1987 movie Wall Street with the new sequel, Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps.  Reprising his role of Gordon Gekko,  Michael Douglas stars with Carey Mulligan  and Shia LaBeouf .  Directed by Oliver Stone, the film follows a somewhat reformed Gordon Gekko as he becomes involved with helping Jake, a young man in the same industry, who happens to be engaged to Gekko’s estranged daughter.  Will Gekko make amends with his daughter?  Will Jake get revenge for the death of his mentor?  Will greed win in the end?  Find out when the DVD comes out on Tuesday, December 21.

winters_boneWinner of the Grand Jury Prize at the 2010 Sundance Film Festival, Winter’s Bone crept in under the radar of the mainstream movie media.  Set in the Ozarks, this is the story of a Ree Dolly, who must be the parent to her younger siblings.  Her mother is mentally absent and her father has jumped bail.  When the family is on the verge of being turned out of their home, Ree embarks on a journey to find her father.  Andrew O’Hehir of Salon.com says, “‘Winter’s Bone’ is a gripping, harrowing ride all the way through, as well as a ridiculously well-made and satisfying motion picture.  Winter’s Bone will be released on DVD on Tuesday, October 26.

i_am_loveAre you a Tilda Swinton fan?  As a actor from Scotland, she has appeared in several films from the United Kingdom and America, but her latest film, I Am Love, is Italian.  Swinton plays Emma, a Russian-born matriarch of a wealthy industrial family in Milan.  The upper-crust family is suddenly surprised when the patriarch announces his retirement and his wishes for his son and grandson to take over the family business.  This throws the grandson, Edo, who has plans to open a restaurant with his friend Antonio.  Dynamics in the family change as power shifts and Emma begins an affair with Antonio, forever changing the family.
