2013 Tony Nominations!

The nominations have been announced for the 67th Annual Tony Awards! The awards ceremony will take place on Sunday, June 9, at 8 pm and will be televised on CBS. TonyAwards.com has a full listing of the nominations and Playbill.com has lots of information on the plays, including synopsis, show dates, performance schedule, run time, theater info, transportation, parking, show advisory, ticket purchasing, and more.

Consumer Electronics Show Opens on Tuesday (1/8/2013)!

I always look forward to the Consumer Electronics Show (CES)! What’s new? What’s possible? What is the future? With our smartphones, I often feel that the future is now. Asking Siri for directions and reminders makes me feel like one of the characters in Star Trek or James Bond movies. If you want to keep up with the action, check out the CES official site. If you want to be informed at all times, download the mobil app. There will be lots written about the show. Don’t forget to check out your favorite technology sites (zdnet.com, cnet.com and mashable.com to name a few) for additional coverage.

Golden Globe Nominations Announced!

The 2012 Golden Globe Award nominations have been announced and we will learn who the winners are on Sunday, January 15, 2012. Our media librarian, Melissa Baker, keeps our shelves stocked with the latest and greatest movie titles for you. Click here to search for your favorite DVD. You may reserve your choices online and even pick them up (after we call you) at our drive thru window.

Timeline Begins Arriving Today. . .

If you haven’t already heard, today is the day that Facebook begins rolling out its highly anticipated Timeline. This article by Sam Biddle of Gizmodo tells us about it, shows us what it will look like, and notes that all of your life can be chronicled in one place. The Today Show is giving a preview of Ann Curry’s page as I write this and the map feature they are highlighting is very interesting too. If you travel extensively or want to chronicle information on your ancestors, you will want to check this out. Timeline hasn’t hit my account yet but I want to remind you that anything you post anywhere on the Internet will be there (in some fashion) forever. I’ll let you know what I think when it arrives in my account!

The Father of eBooks

I think things are finally back to normal. I’m not sure what happened to the end of summer, though. Preparing for the hurricane (buying canned goods, gas, getting a go bag ready), living with no power for a week (not as bad as it could have been), and then catching up on all the things that did not get done during that time–and now it’s September!

Someone who helped changed the world has passed away. Michael Hart, “who was widely credited with creating the first e-book when he typed the Declaration of Independence into a computer on July 4, 1971, and in so doing laid the foundations for Project Gutenberg, the oldest and largest digital library” died on Tuesday, September 6. This New York Times article by William Grimes tells how Mr. Hart paved the way for today’s popular e-books. The world can be changed–one book at a time!

iCloud, iOS 5 and OS X Lion

Well, I just finished checking out the Apple site to learn about their WWDC announcements (see June 5 post) and I have to say I’m impressed. I have become a bi-computer person, using both my PC and my newer Mac. I hear so often that Macs are easier, more intuitive, etc.; however, I still believe that whichever system you originally learn (or put the time into learning) becomes intuitive. And, take note–I’m nowhere near ready to abandon my PC! Having said that, the seamless integration of my MacBook Air, iPod, iPad and to-be-purchased in October iPhone (yes, my passion is electronics) is a force I am willing to reckon with. I have also been wary of the cloud–I still like syncing my phone, contacts, etc. via cable for security purposes; but, let’s be real–my personal stuff is not really (or can be made to be not really) sensitive material. What am I saying? I think the ease of use for personal use might just outweigh the paranoia I have had for years about syncing wirelessly (keep in mind that business and sensitive information should have the highest level of security–and, Apple might just be providing that highest level of security for their iCloud information). I am looking forward to the release dates for OS X Lion and iOS 5! I will now begin reading reviews and commentary on these new products–marketing is marketing after all–and I will of course keep you posted!

WWDC 2011 Opens on Monday!

Verizon Announcement re iPhone

Verizon Announcement on Tuesday re iPhone!

According to a Tweet from the Wall Street Journal, they have confirmed that Verizon will be announcing on Tuesday that the iPhone will be coming to the Verizon network! Here’s a link to the article by Shayndi Raice and Yukari Iwatani Kane! This is exciting news!
