According to an article in The New York Times, Google is “planning to roll out a system of micropayments within the next year and hopes that newspapers will use it as they look for new ways to charge users for their content.” This is in response to a request from the Newspaper Association of America for a proposal for a paid-content solution. Papers are struggling to survive but the concept of “free news” will be difficult to overcome.
