Ordering Food by Phone Without Words

July 27th, 2011 · News, Software, Websites

In a New York Times article by Joshua Brustein, we are introduced to two apps, GrubHub and Seamless.  They are available free for iPhone, Android, and BlackBerry.  They allow you to order food online–easily and wordlessly.  While there is little coverage for our area in Seamless and no coverage yet in GrubHub, they will most likely grow in popularity–you might want to ask your favorite delivery restaurants to sign up.

AAA Apps

July 26th, 2011 · Destinations, Software

Have you seen AAA’s TripTik Mobile app?  It is great for finding the lowest gas price nearest to your location.  This is just great for those summer excursions!  This app also offers maps and turn-by-turn directions.  It also shows AAA offices, approved auto repair facilities and local events.  AAA Discounts will show you AAA discounts available near your current location.  Happy driving and happy summer!

OS X Lion, MacBook Air and Windows 8

July 25th, 2011 · Hardware, News, Programs, Software

I’m very excited about Apple’s OS X Lion!  I upgraded the software on my iPod Touch and iPad this past weekend in preparation for upgrading my MacBook Air from Snow Leopard to Lion.  This first part of my upgrade went rather well and my portable devices are ready to sync (hopefully next weekend) when I upgrade the MacBook Air to Lion.  James Kendrick of ZDNet has a good article on MacBook Air and OS X Lion synergy: A big hurdle for Windows.  As much as I love my Mac, I still can’t live without my PC laptop.  It’s not as fast, but the types of software I use are just not available on the Mac.  And, it will be interesting to see what Microsoft has planned for Windows 8!

HTC Has Patent Troubles

July 16th, 2011 · Hardware, News, Reviews, Software

Adrian Kingsley-Hughes of ZDNet posted a very interesting article entitled “Apple deals massive patent blow to HTC, Android in serious trouble.”  He states that a judge ruled that “smartphone maker HTC has infringed two Apple patents, and it seems likely that every single Android device out there infringes the same patents.”  Yes, this is a big deal and watching for what the fall out is from this ruling is important if you are considering the purchase of an Android phone.

Do You Know What Cramming Is?

July 14th, 2011 · News, Websites

According to the FCC (Federal Communications Commission), cramming is “the practice of placing unauthorized, misleading or deceptive charges on your telephone bill. Crammers rely on confusing telephone bills in an attempt to trick consumers into paying for services they did not authorize or receive, or that cost more than the consumer was led to believe.”  I heard about this on the Today Show this week and wanted to give you this link to the FCC site that advises us to check our bills carefully and question any charges we are unsure of or have not authorized.  Let the buyer beware!

HP TouchPad

July 12th, 2011 · Hardware, News, Reviews, Software

James Kendrick of ZDNet.com posted this very interesting story yesterday:  HP: This TouchPad owner just got very nervous. Thanks. He saw enough promise in the webOS platform–as I did with my purchase of a PalmPre phone.  Then, he discovered yesterday that Jon Rubenstein (head of the webOS unit) had been replaced at HP.  This is truly disheartening news for those who put a great deal of money on the table for this tablet.  As the purchaser of a webOS Palm Pre, I feel their pain.  While my phone is a great device, lack of support from the mother ship for their App Catalog made my purchase less than useful.  I hope the same fate doesn’t come to those new TouchPad purchasers.

Is Nook a Loser for Barnes & Noble?

June 20th, 2011 · Hardware, News, Websites

Barnes & Noble is expected to report a hefty loss tomorrow as it continues to invest in its Nook eBook readers. Click here for an article by Larry Dignan of ZDNet entitled “Will the Nook alter the profit equation?”    The Library’s Nook however is not as popular as our Kindles and iPads and the Nook is really not a bad product.  It would be a real shame to have Barnes & Noble go the same route as Borders.
