These are kind of a big deal. This group of awards includes the Caldecott Medal, the Newbery Medal, and the Printz Award. Of those, the Printz is given to a book demonstrating excellence in literature for young adults (the other two are for picture books and children’s literature, respectively). You can read the American Library Association’s press release with all the awards here. Follow the links below to view the books in the library’s catalog and place holds on them, if you wish. If there is no link, we don’t own the item, but we can always get materials for you through interlibrary loan.

What’s that, you ask? NaNoWriMo stands for National Novel Writing Month. It’s a challenge to write a full-length novel in the span of one month! Go ahead and write– let your imagination take over! For adults, the goal is 50,000 words, or almost 2000 words a day. For the NaNoWriMo Young Writer’s Program, you can set your own reasonable goal. The NaNoWriMo website likes to track how many people are participating, so if you’re going to write the next great American novel, make sure you get all the info and sign up. If you’re over the age of 18, check out the regular NaNoWriMo website to sign up.

Then you are in luck, my friends. The Wilton Library now offers OverDrive, a service where you can download e-books and audio books to all sorts of devices. For example, if you have a smartphone with the Amazon Kindle app, you can borrow a Kindle book from the OverDrive service. When the lending period is over, whoosh! it will no longer be accessible unless you check it out again. You can do the same with audio books, too. And here is the icing on the cake– no late fees!

You do need a valid Wilton Library card and PIN number to use the service, so if you lost your card or don’t have a card, come in to the circulation desk and we’ll set you up for free.

Enjoy!

They have no way of knowing that the snow won’t let up for a week and they are trapped in their high school. They have to keep warm, scavenge for food, and– hopefully– survive.

On April 15, 1912, the RMS Titanic sank after colliding with an iceberg. In this book, Allan Wolf interprets the facts into vignettes told from the point of view of passengers, crew, and even the iceberg itself. Chilling, fascinating, and heartbreaking, this is an excellent book to read as we approach the 100th year anniversary of the ship’s sinking.
Conor O’Malley’s nightmares are real—a terrifying monster constructed from a yew tree visits each night with evidence left behind in the morning. These nightmares begin as big changes happen in his life, including a new school, a distant father, and a mom who has just started cancer treatment. As Conor shoulders these burdens, he becomes more invisible and grief-stricken. Will he be able to deal with all the pain and fear, or will he be crushed by the monster? This book is illustrated with haunting images, making Conor’s situation more real.

Here’s a link to some real stunners. Another link to some outrageous looking moths, including the Deaths Head Moth, will have you not even turning on your porch light. And a link to the scariest animals in nature includes jellyfish, crocodiles, and sharks will keep you from ever going into the water again. At least if you do go in the water you will avoid the mosquito, which the site considers the scariest of all. Sharks everywhere beg to differ…

For what, you ask? For the new Teen summer reading program! Why would you want to do that? Well, for the prizes awarded every week (duh) but also to out-read your competition. How? Well if you are entering 7th grade or higher this year, come into the teen department to register your reading passport and pick up instructions. At the end of each of the six weeks (listed here) you have until 2 days after the week “closes” to record in your passport, which is kept at the library, the books you have finished. For each book you read you get a chance in that weeks’ drawing. So the more books = the more chances you have. When the week closes the drawing is held and the library contacts the winners. So why are you still reading this blog post when you could be increasing your odds to win? Go read!
