Yes time to channel your inner artist! You know what we mean…so sharpen up those knives for carving your Jack O’ Lanterns. We have found a few sites that can help to guide you, including one featuring carving cannabalistic pumpkins (you will just have to see it to believe it), ones with pumpkin carving patterns, and the mother of all pumpkin carving advice sites: extremepumpkins.com. But what if you heart pumpkins and don’t want to carve them? Well you can roast the seeds and just add on decorative accents to your orange friend. But remember, you will eventually have to let him go…so why not make him snazzy now?

And if you missed the Wilton Library’s lesson on making duct tape wallets, that is another single afternoon project that you can do, without drinking 150 cans of soda. And at the Duck Tape website, there are instructions how to make lunch bags, hair bows, all with the Duck Tape brand of duct tape. Which is better than other brands because it comes in zebra and camouflage. Another idea is to paint those converse on your feet. In just a few afternoons you could be the envy of all other crafters! And, the best accessorized…

And tah dah! You can create all kinds of things. Who know about the possibilities? Well that would be Robert Sabuada at his website. He has a wide assortment of paper creatures you can make, from simple to advanced, that range from a simple bird up to a much more complicated (and kind of creepy looking) spider. All you have to do is print his .pdf directions onto a sheet of paper or card stock, snip on the lines, and presto instant animals. Depeding on your patience and skill you could have an entire zoo by the end of the day. Good thing he has directions for an ark on his site too…

Well get it out of your head and onto paper, because the Threadless website is having a tee shirt slogan contest. In case you aren’t familiar with Threadless, they are design forum but also an ongoing open call for tee shirt design submissions. Anyone can sign up, download a tee template and submit ideas, which are then evaluated by the Threadless community for seven days. Tee shirt designs are selected from the pool of the most popular designs as scored by the community. So that means YOUR design could be on a tee for anyone to buy. The best part is the winner of their current contest gets 2500 bucks! Who needs a summer job when you could design a tee shirt instead!

Tie dyeing is a hot trend this summer

Well, duh! The Wilton Library has been offering a tie dye summer workshop for years. plus, who didn’t already know that tie dye is always cool? But don’t go buy something already tie dyed when it is so fun to do yourself! Locally there are many places to buy tie dye kits including Michaels crafts and Jerry’s artorama right down the street . When you have your supplies it is time to follow this tutorial (or you can find your own) on youtube. Kits can dye up to 15 shirts, so it is a fun way to spend a summer day with friends, or you can just tie dye your entire wardrobe including your pj’s like this guy.

Then you must hit the Instructibles website which has instructions on how to create almost anything. Like – how to use liquid latex to create a fish scale effect on skin. Who even knew there was such a thing as liquid latex? And, who knew people wanted to look like fish? And the “homemade holidays” portion of the site shows off readers’ homemade holiday gifts. However I can’t decide between making my own stickers, or converting a Honda Accord to run on trash. Decisions, decisions…

Well there are others like you out there. Besides reading some of the new titles in teens, you can join CoCoRaHS. CoCoRaHS is an acronym for the Community Collaborative Rain, Hail and Snow Network. CoCoRaHS is a unique, non-profit, community-based network of volunteers of all ages and backgrounds working together to measure and map precipitation (rain, hail and snow). All you have to do is get a nifty rain gague to measure the precipitation in your area. Then email the results to be tabulated with other members. The results are used to predict and track weather, and are even reported to NOAA. So join the other weather lovers like you to make a difference in tracking the weather!
