You Need a Passport

For what, you ask? For the new Teen summer reading program! Why would you want to do that? Well, for the prizes awarded every week (duh) but also to out-read your competition. How? Well if you are entering 7th grade or higher this year, come into the teen department to register your reading passport and pick up instructions. At the end of each of the six weeks (listed here) you have until 2 days after the week “closes” to record in your passport, which is kept at the library, the books you have finished. For each book you read you get a chance in that weeks’ drawing. So the more books = the more chances you have. When the week closes the drawing is held and the library contacts the winners. So why are you still reading this blog post when you could be increasing your odds to win? Go read!

When the weather starts getting warmer (yes – it will happen) is when the city becomes much more fun to visit. And what could be better than pairing fun with FREE? Here are a few sites we have found to get you started: nyctix has an extensive list of free shows and how to get tickets. Including: David Letterman, Deal or No Deal, and Saturday Night Live… if you can stay up that late. Website nycgo touts itself as the “official” event site for NYC and has a ton of free and unusual events from free movie passes to a beekeeping lecture …those poor bees aren’t even allowed to hibernate in NYC. Timeout NY has a weekly section devoted to free events, so hit it often to see what’s new. This week are free walking tours of the neighborhood of Grand Central (complete with an accompanying podcast) and free stand up comedy tickets. So now you don’t have any excuse to stay home! Unless it snows again, of course.

No? Well go get some at Let’s Get Flurrious , a website dedicated to you making your own snowflakes. After designing your flake if you hit the “let it snow” icon, your entire screen will be filled with a snowfall composed of your flake falling with flakes made by others. And the best part (besides having fun designing your flake) is that if you email your flake to a friend, the site will give a dollar to Unicef. Click to link to see the good things they do for kids. New Moon Mania!

This weekend was the opening of New Moon, and as you can see by the fans in this CBS news story, it was a little crazy. But those fans helped make New Moon’s opening night the largest grossing ever - taking in 78 million dollars on Friday, beating out Dark Knight. And the ticket buying didn’t stop, causing New Moon to gross over 140 million dollars on the first weekend! Reviews from the fans (we ignore everyone else) are an enthusiastic thumbs up. So now the world will know what the fans already do, that a bat is no match for a vampire.

Well you can take a cue from this Time magazine article about the top costumes of 2001. But while theirs are more “current events focused” the CBS list is a little more quirky. And if you are on of “those people” who dress up your dog, you should visit this site, entitled:”Why Dogs Bite People” for some inspiration. And believe it or not, Lady Gaga is STILL hot this year as a costume as she was the number one searched costume name on . And it is easy to so this do-it-yourself version of her famous bubble dress.

No really, get outside! Why? Well according to the National Wildlife Foundation, staying indoors too much decreases your creativity (bad!), while outdoor time enhances your ability to retain information and learn (good!). Plus it smells so good! They have teamed up with the highly anticipated Spike Jonze film Where the Wild Things Are to launch a nationwide campaign called Be Out There. Its goal? To instill in youth a life-long appreciation of nature. We all love our technology, but gadgets can’t duplicate the glory of the great outdoors! Don’t know where to go? Well at the NWF site there is a park and event finder to help. That perfect tree to read under is waiting for you!

Banned Books? In America?

Yes, sad but true. Every year books are “challenged”, meaning someone attempts to ban them, or sometimes actually does. Check out this map that Google has compiled of where across the country this has happened. Maybe they have not read our Bill of Rights? But the American Library Association is fighting back by celebrating their “Banned Books Week” every year. Please join the fight against censorship this year during Banned Books week from September 26−October 3, 2009 by checking out a banned book at the library, or educate others about attempted censorship. We readers can decide for ourselves what we can read! And PS it is nobody’s business.
