Minecraft Club

Saturday, October 1, 2016 - 10:00am to 12:00pm

Kids ages 8 and up are invited to join Wilton Library’s Minecraft Computer Club. A server for Fairfield County has been set up with a virtual world where the Minecraft community in Wilton can meet and the club welcomes the enthusiasts. Please note: Minecraft is a subscription-based, online game. Players must bring their own laptop and create their own account. Handheld devices are not recommended because they run a Minecraft app that does not work with the same server. To be added to the Fairfield County server you must visit the Children’s Desk with a valid library card to be registered. Caretakers must sign in their child with staff member. If the child is not present and signed in by 10:10, the place may be given to a waitlisted child. Caretakers must remain in the building. Registration required; no fee.

Mother and Daughter Book Club

Calling all daughters and mothers who want to read about heroines that are smart, brave, strong and kind. In the first session we will read Roald Dahl's classic Matilda, about a very intelligent girl and the obstacles she overcomes, with a lot of humor along the way. For grades 3-5. In this program, new players will learn: the history and rules of the game; basic checkmate themes and patterns; basic strategy and tactics. Time will be provided for students to play games and put the classroom lessons into practice. Program fee is $70 per student for all seven meetings. In-person registration is required, payment due at time of registration.

Time will be provided for students to play games and put the classroom lessons into practice. Program fee is $70 per student for all seven meetings. In-person registration is required, payment due at time of registration.

Children ages 2-4 and their caregivers will meet at Ambler Farm to enjoy theme-based stories as well as a nature walk.  Children may check books out at the farm, so make sure to bring your library card!  During the month of October the focus will be pumpkins; November 9 is animals preparing for winter.  Registration required; no fee.  Children must be accompanied by caregivers.

(Not) Just For Kids Music Program--Start with Strings

The Norwalk Symphony Orchestra (Not) Just For Kids program is a lively, fun and interactive program designed to be educational as well as entertaining.  Members of the orchestra demonstrate their instruments, play for the children, and answer questions in hour long presentations. Throughout the season Saturday presentations are made for all instrument families: strings, woodwinds, brass, and percussion. All programs end with attendees having a chance to hold and try to play a beginning level instrument in the 'Petting Zoo.' Saturday, October 15- Start with Strings; December 10, A Joyful Noise!—Percussion; March 4, 2017  Horns a Plenty! –Brass and May 6, 2017  Winds, Soft & Sweet -- Woodwinds.  No charge. ROAR's (Ridgefield Operation Animal Rescue) Therapy Dog Program will be bringing a therapy dog to be read to by children. The use of trained therapy dogs in reading programs can result in children who feel comfortable reading out loud, read more often, attempt more difficult books, and actually look forward to reading. Haunted Chamber

Can you survive the Wilton Children’s library’s Haunted Chamber? Proceed with caution through a nightmarish room filled with slimy touch buckets, creepy obstacles, and scary storytellers. Enter the Haunted Chamber if you dare any time between 2:30 and 5:30 on October 28th. Need to gather your courage before entering the Haunted Chamber? No problem! There will also be a Pumpkin Search & Find game, a jack-o-lantern felt board, and coloring sheets set up in the Children’s Library. Enter the Haunted Chamber if you dare! Walk in - no fee required. Suggested for first grade and up.

In this program, advanced players will: review the basics; learn more advanced strategy and tactics; learn optimal opening and endgame play; gain an appreciation for the vital importance of making and carrying out sound plans. Time will be provided for students to play games and put the classroom lessons into practice. Program fee is $70 per student for all seven meetings. Ambler Farm Reads

Children ages 2-4 and their caregivers will meet at Ambler Farm to enjoy theme-based stories as well as a nature walk.  Children may check books out at the farm, so make sure to bring your library card!  The focus is on animals preparing for winter.  Registration required; no fee.  Children must be accompanied by caregivers.

Lottery registration forms are available at the Children's Library desk starting August 25 and must be returned by September 10. Patrons will be notified via email if they receive a spot. This is a 10-week program.
