Children in grades 1-7 will get beginner chess instruction from Christopher Potts, an instructor, tournament player and US Chess Federation certified tournament director. In this program, brand new players will learn: the history and rules of the game; basic checkmate themes and patterns; basic strategy and tactics. Time will be provided for students to play games and put the classroom lessons into practice.  Call 203-762-6336 for details.

Wilton Reads—90 Miles to Havana-Children’s Book Discussion

Wednesday, October 25, 2017 - 5:30pm to 6:30pm

Kids in grades 5 - 7 are invited to join this book discussion as part of the Wilton Reads program. The book selected is 90 Miles to Havana by Enrique Flores-Galbis. Registrants will receive a free copy of the novel to read before the program. In 90 Miles to Havana Julian and his brothers flee from Cuba to Miami in 'Operation Pedro Pan'. Once in Miami they soon find that things were not as they hoped. Julian must be courageous and grow up quickly if he is to overcome his struggles. This is a coming-of-age story inspired by real events from the author's life. Kids will have the opportunity to participate in the discussion and some activities. Cuban sandwiches will be provided by Craft 14.   Registration required; space is limited to ten participants. No fee. The free books are sponsored by Fairfield County Bank.  Books available Sept. 25. Can you survive the Wilton Children's Library's Haunted Chamber? Proceed with caution through a nightmarish room filled with slimy touch buckets, creepy obstacles, and scary storytellers. Enter the Haunted Chamber if you dare any time between 2:30 and 5:30 p.m. Need to gather your courage before entering the Haunted Chamber? No problem! There will also be a Pumpkin Search & Find game, a jack-o-lantern felt board, and coloring sheets set up in the Children's Library. Enter the Haunted Chamber if you dare! Walk in - no fee required. Suggested for first grade and up.

ROAR's (Ridgefield Operation Animal Rescue) Therapy Dog Program will be bringing a therapy dog to be read to by children.  The use of trained therapy dogs in reading programs can result in children who feel comfortable reading out loud, read more often, attempt more difficult books, and look forward to reading. As they improve their literacy skills, they’re not just learning how to read, they’re learning to love to read!  Children must read independently to participate in this program.  No program charge, registration is required.  Register online or call 203-762-6336.

(Not) Just for Kids—Orchestra Music Families

The Norwalk Symphony Orchestra (Not) Just For Kids program is a lively, fun and interactive program designed to be educational as well as entertaining. Members of the orchestra demonstrate their instruments, play for the children, and answer questions in hour long presentations. Throughout the season presentations are made for all instrument families: strings, woodwinds, brass, and percussion. All programs end with attendees having a chance to hold and try to play a beginning level instrument in the 'Petting Zoo.'
