Maps on exhibit

With discovery as the theme for the library this month, it is only fitting that the art exhibition which will be displayed starting October 15 through the end of November is Discover the World. A collection of more than two dozen antique maps from various private collections make up this intriguing exhibit. Cartography from as early as the 1400s is on display with everything from world maps to a map of Wilton from the 1800s. The maps will be available for viewing during library hours, including Wilton Library Discovery Day on Saturday, Oct. 22. The exhibit runs through the end of November.

Babysitter training this Sunday

The Babysitter Training program by the American Red Cross is this Sunday, Oct. 16 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the library for kids ages 11 - 15. The cost is $50 per child for the course. Advance registration and payment must be made to hold the reservation. Participants are asked to bring bag lunches. To register, call 762-3950.

Story Times continue at library

Fall Story Times are at various times and dates Mondays through Thursdays through Nov. 17 for children ages 1 - 5. There is no charge for the program, however advance registration is required. Ones meet on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 10:30 - 11; Twos also are on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 11:30 - noon. Both Ones and Twos need to be accompanied by adults. Threes gather on Mondays and Tuesdays from 1 - 1:30 and Fours and Fives get together from 2 - 2:45. Call 762-3950 or register online.

Teens get creative with old sweaters

It's in the Bag! is a workshop for kids in grades 7 - 12 in which they use their creativity and old sweaters to construct new hobo bags and purses. The seminar is on Tuesday, Oct. 18 from 5 - 7 p.m. Kids are encouraged to bring old sweaters from home to cut them up into colorful pieces for the bags. Materials also will be supplied by the library. Pizza will be served. There is no charge for the program which is made possible by the John Curran Memorial Teen Fund. Dating Violence discussed

Two Wilton High School students will discuss their Senior Interest Project with parents and teens in Wilton Teens Speak Out: What Parents Should Know about Dating Violence on Tuesday, Oct. 18 from 7:30 - 9 p.m. at the library. The program is sponsored by the Domestic Violence Crisis Center, Wilton Task Force on Domestic Violence, Wilton Fathers' Forum, Wilton Parent Connection and the library. In addition to the teens, the seminar will be facilitated by Susan Delaney, coordinator of Education & Training at the Domestic Violence Crisis Center and Jane Field, community educator for DVCC and a Youth Minister in Wilton. The students will discuss what dating violence is, how to recognize the warning signs of an abusive relationship, how parents and their children can talk about it, and how to get help for oneself or a friend. Women Voters present Board of Selectmen

In the continuing series called Chips 'n' Chat on Wednesday, Oct. 19 at 7:30 p.m., members and candidates for the Board of Selectmen take part in a forum moderated by the Wilton League of Women Voters. Candidates will respond to audience questions. There is no charge for the program. Wine and cheese will be served. The series is sponsored by the League of Women Voters, the Wilton Chamber of Commerce and the library. The last chat will be on Wednesday, Oct. 26 with the Planning & Zoning Commission.

Poe Party for teens

On Thursday, Oct. 20 from 7 - 8:30 p.m. kids in grades 7 - 12 will celebrate the life and times of Edgar Allan Poe in an evening commemorating the master of macabre. Just in time for Halloween, the evening includes recitations from Poe's work by a Poe impersonator. There is no charge for the program. Advance registration is suggested. Discover all that's new at the library

Wilton Library Discovery Day on Saturday, Oct. 22 from 11 - 2 will have a little something for everyone in this celebration for the community. A mime, bands on the veranda and a free hot dog and hamburger BBQ by Barcelona Restaurant are just some of the highlights, and that's just on the outside. On the inside of the library, guided tours, special information stations and other treats are in store for those who stop by to see the new and the recently refurbished facility. Everyone is invited.
