Digital cameras explainedMary Anne and Michael Franco, the library's digital photography duo, begin this season's seminars on Saturday, Nov. 12 from 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. with Digital Camera Basics. The differences between digital and 35mm terminology will be discussed with the new digital camera owner in mind. Additional classes are on Jan. 7 Fun Creations with Pictures; Feb. 4 Basic Picture Editing; March 4 Scan and Restore Precious Photos; May 13 Catalog Photos using Adobe Photoshop Elements. Norwalk Symphony for familiesThe Norwalk Symphony Family Program (Not) Just for Kids returns to the library this year with the first session on Saturday, Nov. 12 from 1-2 p.m. Children ages 3 - 10 and their families will be able to experience woodwind instruments. Additional dates for this four-part series are Jan. 21 strings; Feb. 18 brass; April 14 percussion. Children will be able to have hands-on experiences with all the instruments. Teen knitters uniteWith the holiday gift-giving season right around the corner, the library has a neat way for teens to make something personal for friends with the Teen Knitting Workshop on Monday, Nov. 14 from 4 - 5:30 p.m. Kids in grades 7 - 12 will learn how to make knitted belts. A follow-up workshop on Monday, Nov. 28 from 4-5 also is available to help kids finish their projects. Materials will be provided by the library. Boys as lifelong readersAuthor and library director Michael Sullivan shares his insights with parents, librarians and educators on how to interest boys in lifelong reading at a seminar at the library on Tuesday, Nov. 15 from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. The seminar, Connecting Boys with Books based on Sullivan's book, includes how boys learn, the importance of male role-models, creating reading relating games and how to keep the interest long term. The session addresses the needs of boys with and without learning disabilities. The program is sponsored by Wilton PTA Council, Wilton Public Schools Special Services, SPED*NET and the library. Open house showcases new resources at libraryThe community is invited to an open house for the Parent/Teacher Resources on Thursday, Nov. 15 from 7 - 8:30 p.m. The evening will introduce parents and caregivers to new resources and adaptive technology now available at the library for families with special needs children. Parents will be able to explore the library's new acquisitions, borrow materials, interact with others, receive aid from specially-trained staff and try out the adaptive technology. The resources are made possible by a grant from the Federal LSTA (administered by the Connecticut State Library). With the support of the grant, the library is expanding its special needs orientation by creating workshops for library professionals and by increasing the library's collection and resources to include books, videos/DVDs, computers with assistive technology, and Web site links for parents and caregivers of special needs children. Free movie day for kidsOn Thursday, Nov. 17 from 2-3:30 p.m. the library is offering Anime Movie Day with the free screening of Spirited Away. Kids have the afternoon off for parent/teacher conferences so a trip to the library is a great way to spend some free time with friends and a movie. Children under 5 must be accompanied by an adult. There is no charge for the movie and reservations are not required.
