The Elements art exhibitionThis is the time of year when "the elements" seem to reflect many inches of snow and ice plaguing the region, however at the library "The Elements" is a visually engaging representation of the Periodic Table by local artist Nash Hyon. From Helium (#2) to Radium (#88), the artist presents a selection of the elements using encaustic with mixed media providing a varied look in the more than two dozen paintings. According to Ms. Hyon, "The paintings in these series are contemporary in thought but also reference the past in terms of materials, process and history while their seductive surfaces lure the viewer in the concepts that [I] am expressing." The exhibit runs through Thursday, Dec. 29 and is open during library hours, Monday and Friday, 10 - 6, Tuesday through Thursday 10 - 7, Saturday, 10 - 5 and Sunday 1 - 5. For information: 762-3950.
Library schedule in bad weatherWith the first few inches of white powder having blanketed the area with more on the horizon, people are reminded that the library uses many communications vehicles to alert the public as to whether there is a delayed opening, early closing or if the library must close for the day. The library will try to remain available to the community during bad weather, however decisions about delayed openings and early closings also take into account risk and safety factors related to patrons in the parking lots and walkways and library staff members driving in from great distances. The library uses several media outlets and Web sites to disseminate the information. Radio stations notified are: WEBE 108FM, WEFX 95.9FM, WEZN 99.9FM, WKHL Kool 96.7FM, WNLK 1350AM, WSTC 1400AM, and WLAD 80AM. The TV stations notified are News 12 TV and WFSB TV 3. Notifications also are available on www.cancellations.com, www.ctweather.com and the library's Web site at www.wiltonlibrary.org. The library's phone number (203) 762-3950 may also be called to hear the recorded message indicating the library's status due to inclement weather.

Museums for familiesOnce the wrapping paper is ripped off and all jumbled up in the living room, the question of what to do with the children during vacation week will be upon most parents. The library's Museum Pass Program may be a good answer. With more than ten museums on the list, families can enjoy free or reduced rate admission to many area museums. From the Maritime Aquarium in Norwalk to the Mystic Aquarium in Mystic, from the Dinosaur State Park in Rocky Hill to Stepping Stones Museum for Children in Norwalk, families can share the fun of seeing hands-on science centers, dinosaurs, marine life, carousels and a range of other activities. Passes may be reserved for up to one month in advance by calling the library or signing up at the front desk. The passes are loaned out for three consecutive days. There is no charge to reserve the passes and passes are free. Patrons are responsible for the actual admission fees if applicable or any fees or charges beyond those included with the pass such as parking or special exhibits. A brochure outlining the program is available at the library. For information: 762-3950.
Reminder: The library will be closed on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, Saturday and Sunday, Dec. 24 and 25.
