Seminar on success

Everything You Always Wanted to Know About Success is a seminar co-sponsored by the library and the Wilton Chamber of Commerce on Friday, Feb. 25 from 9:30 - 11 a.m. Michael Crystal, Ph.D. is the featured guest speaker who will be exploring "success" - how to define it, how to best realize it and what to do or not do to ensure that it lasts. Dr. Crystal is a coach and consultant to many of the foremost leaders and organizations in the world and has spent more than thirty years helping people perform better at work while deriving more fulfillment from work. He holds degrees in psychology, industrial management and organizational behavior, and has post-doctoral certifications in the advanced study of change management from Stanford, Harvard and Columbia universities. Chess aficionados welcome

"Checkmate" may be the cry heard most of the day on Saturday, Feb. 26 while the Scholastic Chess Tournament for kids in grades K - 12 is underway at the library. The tournament begins at 10 a.m. with doors opening at 9 a.m. Advance registration for the tournament is $10 per child; at the door on Saturday, the fee is $15 per child. Registration is at the front desk or at Children's Services, not online or on the phone. The registration includes continental breakfast, lunch, beverage and an awards ceremony at the end of play. Tournament directors will officiate at the proceedings. The tournament is open to skill levels from advance beginner to expert. For more information, call Fran McGowan at 762-3950.

Musical treat at the library

Winnie the Pooh, insects and animals are the featured elements of the free children's concert on Sunday, Feb. 27 from 2:30 - 3:30 p.m. when the Prevailing Winds Quintet of Connecticut performs a woodwind concert. The musicians are Ralph Kirmser on oboe, Richard Epstein on bassoon, Cecelia Sparacio on flute, Janet Atherton on clarinet and Stewart Edelstein on French horn. Advance registration is suggested. Dragon tales

On two Saturdays in March, kids will be treated to stories of dragons, trolls and possibly unicorns in special story hours set aside for kids in grades K - 3. Folklore and Fantasy story hours meet on Saturday, March 5 and 19 to explore the wonderful world of literature. There is no charge for the program. Advance registration is suggested. Two artists featured for March exhibit

Julilana Van Norden and Amy Foster have combined their talents for the March art exhibition, "Faces and Places," which begins with the artists' opening reception on Sunday, March 6 from 11:30 a.m. - 1 p.m. Ms. Van Norden's artwork includes portraitures, landscapes and still life on oil on linen. Ms. Foster's pieces are landscapes and still life oil paintings as well as more than fifteen sculptures in mixed media, ceramic, bronze and glass. The art exhibition runs through Tuesday, March 29. The works are for sale with a portion of the proceeds benefiting the library. For more information, call 762-3950.

Kings examined

Popular guest lecturer Ann Martin conducts a 5-part series on two of Shakespeare's kings on Monday, March 7. "Uneasy Lies the Head" - An Exploration of Shakepeare's Kings with Ann Martin is on five consecutive Mondays (March 7, 14, 21, 28 and April 4). The discussions center on Shakepeare's Richard II and Henry V, their responsibilities of being king and stylistic differences. Books are available for purchase at the front desk. Communicating with children

On Thursday, March 10 from 10 - 11:30 a.m., Wilton school psychologists Jackie Monahan and Beth Gallos, along with Pauline Smith, assistant director of Special Services for Wilton schools, will have a discussion and presentation for parents based on the book, How to Talk So Kids Willl Listen and Listen So Kids Will Talk. The program is designed to provide strategies on how to better communicate with children to avoid conflict. Books will be available for purchase. There is no charge for the program.
