Passport to Adventure begins

Summer vacation has officially started and what better way to begin a child's vacation than with a visit to the Passport booth at the library. The library's summer reading program, Passport to Adventure, highlights the cultures and customs of children around the world. Before the "journey" begins, children can come to the library to have their photos taken for their passports. These special booklets will keep track of the times they have traveled to the library and the books they have read. The reading program includes story times on Tuesdays for children ages one to eight, crafts programs on Thursdays for kids ages three to seven and entertainment programs for children of all ages accompanied by adults.

Drop-In Story Times start on Tuesdays, July 12, 19, 26, August 2 and 9 with the following age groups and times: Ones from 10:30 - 11; twos from 11:30 - 12; threes and fours from 1:30 - 2 and fives through eights from 3 - 3:45. The ones and twos must be accompanied by adults. There is no charge for the program and registration is not required.

Adventurous Entertainment begins Wednesday, July 13 at 4 p.m. with Caribbean for Kids. The programs continue on various days and times as follows: Wednesday, July 20 Across the Americas with Roger Tincknell at 1 p.m.; Friday, July 22 Won-Ldy Paye, a Liberian storyteller at 2 p.m.; Wednesday, July 27 The Lost Ark - Animals of the World at 2 p.m.; Friday, July 29 Mohegan Tribe of Connecticut represented by Shane Long at 2 p.m. and Thursday, August 4 The Irish Minstrel with Richard Stillman at 2 p.m. There is no charge for each program. Advance registration is required.

Cultural Crafts begin on Thursday, July 14 from 3 - 4 p.m. for children ages 3 - 7. Following the theme of the summer program, kids will be making crafts having to do with travel and adventure. The crafts are as follows: July 14 Antarctic Antics, July 21 Native Americans and July 28 Down Under. Advance registration is required for each program. The materials fee is $5 per child/$4 Young Readers per session.

A visit from a Shakespearean storyteller

Tom Lee will be returning to the library on Thursday, June 23 from 7 - 8 p.m. to present The Tempest. The program is part of the outreach program from Shakespeare on the Sound in Rowayton. The storytelling is for children ages 3 - 8 and their families. There is no charge for the program. Advance registration is suggested. Call 762-3950 or register online.

Concert series about to begin

Even with construction vehicles and paraphernalia all about the library this summer, the sounds of music emanating from the courtyard for the fifth annual Summer Music & More Concert Series will be heard loud and clear. For four consecutive Thursday evenings from 5 - 6:30 bands will play blues, rock 'n' roll and acoustic rock to sounds of their fans cheering them on. Chance Browne and his blue band, Twinkies, will open up the concert series on Thursday, June 30. The teen band Flooded will return with some friends to provide the entertainment for July 7. Although the library will be closed that week, the concert will still be going strong. On July 14, Jeff Harding, a 1994 graduate of Wilton High School will be up from Florida to entertain the crowd with his acoustic rock. Bob Riccio and his band, Kix, will close out the concert series on July 21 with rock 'n' roll. On both the 14th and 21st the Adult Services sections of the library will be closed for site renovations. The Children's Library will be open for programs and the concerts will take place. The Summer Music & More Concert Series is sponsored by The Village Market. The concerts and refreshments are free. For more information, call 762-3950.
