The last program for Cultural Crafts takes place this afternoon from 3 - 4 p.m. for children ages 3 - 7 with activities from Down Under. The program follows the theme of the summer reading program, Passport to Adventure, which is sponsored by Stop & Shop. The materials fee for the program is $5 per child/$4 for Young Readers. Advance registration is required. Call 762-3950 to register.

Adventurous Entertainment continues

Friday's Adventurous Entertainment program brings Shane Long representing the Mohegan Tribe of Connecticut at 2 p.m. The program promises to introduce children to Native American cultures and customs. There is no charge for the program. Advance registration is suggested. Children must be accompanied by adults. Call 762-3950 or register online.

Cool movies to cool off

Kids can take a break from their summertime activities to relax in a cool environment while watching their favorite movies on a large projection screen during Reel Wednesdays from 3:30 - 5 p.m. The first movie is Lemony Snicket-A Series of Unfortunate Events on Wednesday, Aug. 3. Children under 5 must be accompanied by adults. There is no charge for the program and registration is not required. Additional dates and films are Aug. 10 Racing Stripes, Aug. 17 Pooh's Heffalump Movie and Aug. 24 Because of Winn Dixie. Popcorn and lemonade will be served. Reel Wednesdays are sponsored by Louis Dreyfus Corporation. For more information, call 762-3950 Ext. 213.

Teen movies available in lobby

While the Teen area is still under wraps during the renovation of the old building, the Teen DVDs have been rescued and now are in the new lobby. New DVDs such as Cellular, Flight of the Phoenix, Hitch and Wimbledon are available for loan along with the rest of the Teen DVD collection. For more information, call 762-3950.

Amnesty Month ending

Now with the new expansion open and the renovated part of the library set to open Aug. 8, Amnesty Month has been extended one week. Items that were due during the construction period July 1 through Aug. 8 should be returned to the library by end of business on Monday, Aug. 8 so as not to incur any fees. Starting Tuesday, Aug. 9, all fees will be applied to items that have not been returned. The amnesty period was granted to help ease the inconvenience during the major construction renovation. Items may be returned at the circulation desk in the new lobby, the 24-hour drop bin in the driveway between the library and the bank or the new drive-thru window located on the Godfrey Place side of the building which is open during library hours. The library is open Monday and Friday 10 - 6, Tuesday through Thursday 10 - 7 and Saturday 10 - 5. The library is closed on Sundays in the summer. For more information, call 762-3950.

Books needed for book sale

Although it seems as though the cool rains of April just ended, the organizers for the annual April book sale are looking for a lot of good books. Jan MacEwen and Jan Galletly, co-chairs of the library's leading fund-raiser, now have the opportunity to bring a much larger book sale to the community next spring with the opening of the new expansion. As such, they are looking for donations of fiction and non-fiction books, DVDs and music CDs in large quantities to create a huge sale which in turn will benefit the library's fund-raising activities. Patrons who are moving or just doing major cleaning out of basements and attics and therefore have cartons of books may call 227-8502 or (203) 377-1831. Assistance may be available for people who are lacking transportation and a means of getting the cartons to the library. Patrons are reminded that textbooks, condensed books and magazines, along with encyclopedias and items of questionable quality are not needed. These items are detrimental to the library's fund-raiser in that it requires time and money to have them removed from the premises. The donation book bin is still located outside the Godfrey Place entrance (the former staff entrance which is now the delivery entrance). The blue drop box in the driveway between the library and the bank is for current collection items only, not donation items. Anyone who wishes to volunteer time now to organize, sort and price items on an ongoing basis may call 227-8502 or (203) 377-1831.
