Strumming along at the library

A surprise treat for kids in August is a jumping, jiggling fun time with Robert the Guitar Guy on Tuesday, Aug. 23 from 3 - 3:45 at the library. Robert Markowitz a k a Robert the Guitar Guy is a children's singer, guitarist, songwriter, recording artist and educator. He has developed a method of musical play for pre-school and kindergarten children which incorporates music, rhythm, movement, humor, role-playing and props that makes his performance fun for everyone. According to Markowitz, his CD, "Don't Sneeze Choo-Choo Train" won the 2004 iParenting Media Award and was favorably reviewed by School Library Journal. There is no charge for the program. Last "reel"y good time

The last "Reel Wednesdays" before school starts is set for Aug. 24 from 3:30 - 5 with the free showing of Because of Winn Dixie. The children's movies are shown free of charge thanks to a sponsorship by Louis Dreyfus Corporation. Children 5 and under must be accompanied by an adult. Reservations are not required. Free refreshments of popcorn and lemonade are also part of the fun. For more information, call 762-3950.

Fall programs taking shape

The library has made it through most of the construction upheaval and is ready to offer an assortment of fall programs from toddlers to seniors. For children, the Fall Story Times will begin the week of Sept. 26 and continue for 8 weeks through Nov. 17. The story times are for kids ages 1 - 5 at various times during the week. There is no charge for the program, however registration is required. Kids from ages 11 - 15 have Babysitting Training through the American Red Cross on Sunday, Sept. 11 from 11 - 5. The program is $50 per child. Advance registration and payment is required. For teens and their parents The New SAT Essay will be discussed on Thursday, Sept. 15 at 7 p.m. with Dan Hughes, representing a well-known college testing consulting company. The session gives kids a chance to take a practice exam to get a better understanding of the demands. Also for parents of college freshmen, Freshman Frenzy-How to Support Your Teenager's Transition to College with Janet Bertoldi, Ph.D is on Thursday, Sept. 22 at 7:30 p.m. For museum-lovers, the library and St. Matthew's Episcopal Church are co-sponsoring a bus trip to the Yale Center for British Art also on Thursday, Sept 15 from 9 - 5. The cost is $30 per person for the bus and private tour. Advance registration and payment is required. For the politically-minded, the Wilton League of Women Voters moderates a Chips 'n' Chat on Wednesday, Sept. 28 from 7:30 - 9:30 p.m. with the Board of Finance members and candidates. The event is sponsored with the library and the Wilton Chamber of Commerce. Additional forums will be held during the fall.

Discussions about books and authors take place throughout September: Wilton Library Readers with Susan Boyar discuss David Copperfield by Charles Dickens on Wednesday, Sept. 14 from noon - 1; The Life and Times of Beatrix Potter is on Wednesday, Sept. 21 at 7 p.m. with Betsy Bray, a Connecticut librarian and Beatrix Potter Society member; Ben Van Vechten starts a 5-part series on Five Poets on Thursday, Sept. 22 from 10:30 - noon; local authors and twin sisters Carolyn Spiro, M.D. and Pamela Spiro Wagner discuss their book, Divided Minds: Twin Sisters and Their Journey Through Schizophrenia," about Pamela's struggle on Sunday, Sept. 25 at 2; the Senior Center Book Discussion on Tuesday, Sept. 27 opens with library staffer Michael McEneaney discussing The Princes of Ireland by Edward Rutherfurd; the International Book Group: Literature of Other Lands begins their second season with library staff Nevine Michaels of Egypt discussing Palace Walk by Naguib Mafouz on Thursday, Sept. 29 from 7 - 8:30 p.m.

Library all aglitter

"Just Jewels," the library's sixth annual ladies' soirée takes place on Sunday, Sept. 25 from 6 - 8 p.m. The fund-raiser benefits the library's technology fund and programs. A silent auction of anything with jewels and gems - apparel, jewelry, furnishings, accessories, wine and more - is the highlight of the evening, along with great food, drink and company. People wishing to donate items may contact the co-chairs of the event, Christine McGovern at 762-9498 or Courtney Kleeman at 203-561-9199, or library director Kathy Leeds at 762-3950. Invitations to the event will be mailed shortly, although participation does not need to be limited to those who have received invitations.
