Babysitting training at library

The start of the school year seems to bring a new cache of kids ready for babysitting prime time. To help kids ages 11 - 15 with this important step, the library offers an American Red Cross Babysitting Training course on Sunday, Sept. 11 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. The cost is $50 per child. Advance registration and payment is required as the course has limited seating. Children are advised to bring bag lunches. Call 762-3950 for details and to register.

Wilton Library Readers begin their discussions

The Wilton Library Readers commence their fall season on Wednesday, Sept. 14 from noon to 1 with the discussion of David Copperfield by Charles Dickens. The group is led by Susan Boyar and meets every second Wednesday of the month through May with the exception of December. Participants are encouraged to bring a bag lunch for the informal chats. There is no charge for the program. Advance registration is not required. The list of books being read and discussed this season is found on the library's Web site at WLA Readers.

Museum road trip

The library is continuing its co-sponsorship of bus trips to museums with St. Matthew's Episcopal Church with a trip to the Yale Center for British Art on Thursday, Sept. 15 from 9 to 5. The museum houses the largest and most comprehensive collection of British art outside the U.K. According to the museum's Web site, "The collection of paintings, sculptures, drawings, prints and rare books and manuscripts reflects the development of British art from the Elizabethan period onward." During this visit, the Worlds of Francis Wheatley is the featured exhibition along with the regular displays. The cost of $30 per person includes the bus trip and a private tour. Lunch is not included. The bus leaves the library at 9 a.m. and departs New Haven at 4. There is limited seating on the bus, therefore seats are on a first come, first serve basis. Advance registration and payment is required. Call the library at 762-3950 for details and to register and pay.

Museum passes available at library

The summer may be drawing to a close but it's never too late to plan a trip to a museum for this fall using the library's Museum Pass program. With this program, patrons can visit an assortment of museums around the state for free or reduced admission prices. From dinosaurs in a park in Rocky Hill to beluga whales at Mystic Aquarium to seals at the Maritime Center to Mark Twain in Hartford, the program covers an array of interests for young and old alike. The passes can be reserved for three days in total and are free of charge. Patrons need only pay the admission prices and parking fees as indicated on each of the passes. A late fee applies for passes returned after the due date. A brochure is available with the list of museums on the program. Call 762-3950 to make reservations for the passes.

SAT essay seminar

Juniors and seniors in high school may be spending their last few days of summer in carefree modes, but in a few short days they will be in the thick of starting the new school year. Along with that realization is the one that SAT testing is right around the corner in October, November and December with the new essay portion of the exam. On Tuesday, Sept. 13 at 7 p.m., Dan Hughes, representing a national testing consulting firm, hosts an informational seminar, The New SAT Essay. The session looks at what makes a good essay and gives students a chance to take a practice exam under test-like conditions which will be graded and returned to the students at a later time. There is no charge for the program. Advance registration is suggested. Students and parents are welcome. Interested attendees should note that this seminar was originally scheduled for 9/15, which is Wilton High School's Open House. The library changed the date of the seminar to eliminate the conflict. Call 762-3950 or register online.
