Minstrel comes to library today

Richard Stillman, the Irish Minstrel, comes to the library today for Adventurous Entertainment at 2 p.m. The event is part of the Passport to Adventure summer reading program sponsored by Stop & Shop. Richard Stillman is a multitalented performer, who brings a unique combination of talents as a singer, dancer, storyteller and instrumentalist. Kids will experience musical cultures from Africa, Spain, South America, Russia, Israel, Italy, Japan, Ireland and more. He uses a large selection of native instruments, plus jigs, tarantellas, horas, and flamenco dances in a dynamic multicultural presentation of music and dance. Today's performance is the last of the Adventurous Entertainment programs. There is no charge for the program. Advance registration is suggested. Call 762-3950 or register online.

Last Story Times for summer

The last session of Drop-In Story Times takes place on Tuesday, Aug. 9 at various times throughout the day for kids ages one to eight. The Ones meet from 10:30 - 11; Twos are 11:30 - noon; Threes and Fours meet from 1:30 - 2 and Fives through Eights get together from 3 - 3:45. One and two-year olds must be accompanied by adults. There is no charge for the Story Times and registration is not required.

Drop-In Story Times will resume this fall starting the week of September 26, Mondays through Thursdays for children ages one through five. There is no charge for the Story Times, however advance registration is required. The programs will run through the week of November 14. Ones will meet on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 10:30 - 11; Twos will meet on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 11:30 - noon. Both Ones and Twos must be accompanied by adults. Threes get together on Mondays and Tuesday from 1 - 1:30 and Fours and Fives gather from 2 - 2:45. There will be no Story Times on the school holidays: Tuesday, Oct. 4, Monday, Oct. 10 and Thursday, Oct. 13. For more information, call 762-3950 or register online.

Free movies for kids in August

Reel Wednesdays are back at the library from 3:30 - 5 p.m. with free movies being shown on a large projection screen as follows: Aug. 10 Racing Stripes; Aug. 17 Pooh's Heffalump Movie; and Aug. 24 Because of Winn Dixie. The movies are free as are the popcorn and lemonade. Kids can relax in a cool atmosphere in the heat of the summer. Children under 5 must be accompanied by adults. Reservations are not required. Adult Services scheduled to open

Next Monday, Aug. 8 the Adult Services section of the library is scheduled to be open. Fiction and non-fiction books, audiobooks on CD and tapes, music CDs, videos, magazines, Internet and computer access, reference materials and the teen collection will once again be available to patrons. This is in addition to the summer reading cart for students in grades 6 - 12, new books, new large print books, book club books and DVDs which are currently in the new lobby, plus all the books and DVDs in the new Children's Library. The major renovations to the library are completed with this opening, leaving sections of the collection to be moved at various times during the fall. The remaining parts of the major construction include the completion of the Brubeck Room and the addition of the northeast section.

New DVDs at the library

With all the construction hubbub, people may not be aware that a number of new DVDs have made their way into the new lobby. Some recent feature films and TV programs now available on DVD are Beyond the Sea, Love Actually, Million Dollar Baby, Monk-Season Three (TV), Upside of Anger, A Very Long Engagement (French), West Wing-Fourth Season (TV), and The Wool Cap (TV). Now in circulation in the Teen collection are Be Cool, Big Fat Liar, Bride and Prejudice, Cellular, Center Stage, Coach Carter, Flight of the Phoenix Hitch, In Good Company, Legally Blonde 2 and Wimbledon. Feature film DVDs may be borrowed for two nights for $1 each. Late fees are $2 per day per item. Non-fiction and TV (non-premium channel) DVDs may be borrowed for seven days at no charge. Late fees do apply. Starting the week of August 8 when the Adult Services section of the library re-opens, DVDs will be moved to their new Audiovisual Collection area.
