International Book Group

Library staffer Nevine Michaels will be leading the discussion of Palace Walk by Naguib Mafouz on Thursday, Sept. 29 at 7 p.m. for the International Book Group: Literature of Other Lands. This group meets throughout the year at various times to read for pleasure and discuss books of other lands with people from those countries. Ms. Michaels grew up in Egypt attending schools and American University where she received her BA and Master's degree. In her twenties, she moved with her father and family to the U.S. She met her husband in this country then lived in Abu Dhabi for several years before returning to this country and ultimately Wilton, where she and her family have lived for five years. The International Book Group is open to everyone. There is no charge for the program. Advance registration is suggested. Refreshments and dessert from the country of origin are served. The next date for the book group meeting is Thursday, October 27 when Laureen Mody will lead the talk on her native country India with the book Interpreter of Maladies by Jhumpa Lahiri. Antique maps on display

The October art exhibition at the library, Discover the World, features numerous antique maps created from as early as the 1400s. The display of more than a dozen maps provdes a progression of the exploration of the world and the Americas including a map of Wilton. Patrons can follow the development of mapmaking from the very primitive to the more elaborate, showcasing the detail and beauty of each chart. The exhibit runs from Saturday, Oct. 1 through Sunday, Oct. 30. The exhibition is available for viewing during library hours which are Monday and Friday, 10 - 6; Tuesdays through Thursdays, 10 - 7; Saturdays, 10 - 5 and Sundays, 1 - 5. Meet the candidates forums

The next installment of Chips 'n' Chat takes place on Wednesday, Oct. 5 from 7:30 - 9:30 p.m. at the library with a forum for Board of Education members and candidates. The meetings are sponsored by the Wilton League of Women Voters, the Wilton Chamber of Commerce and the library. Audience members are encouraged to ask questions of the candidates. Additional dates for the forums are Oct. 19 for the Board of Selectmen and October 26 for the Planning and Zoning Commission. There is no charge for the program. College admissions process discussed

With the tri-town College Fair scheduled for mid-October at Wilton High School, the library's seminar, Planning and Paying for College on Thursday, Oct. 6 at 7 p.m. comes at the right time to benefit students and parents. Howard and Matthew Greene, educational planning consultants, provide essential information for families involved in the college planning process. Based on their successful PBS television program, Ten Steps to College, the Greenes help families formulate strategies and plans for the college admissions process and for the financial part of achieving a college education. Non-fiction videos moved

With the re-opening of the temporary location for non-fiction books, patrons should be advised that non-fiction videos have been moved. Ranging in topics from instructional videos such as exercise and sports to cooking, travel, science, animals and astrology, non-fiction videos are temporarily located in the first few shelves near the circulation desk to the side of the large type books. They are placed in Dewey decimal number which can be found by using the online catalogs. Reference librarians will be able to help patrons if they are not finding the video they want.

Wilton Library Readers are illuminated

The next meeting of the Wilton Library Readers is on Wednesday, Oct. 12 from noon to 1 p.m. Susan Boyar will lead the discussion of Everything is Illuminated by Jonathan Safran Foer. The group meets every second Wednesday of the month through May, with the exception of December. Participants may bring bag lunches to this informal gathering. There is no charge for the program and registration is not required.

Reminder: The library will be closed on Sunday and Monday, Oct. 9 and 10 for Columbus Day.
