Children can fire up their creative juices at the library over the next few days with two drop-in craft programs. Today through Saturday, Feb. 11 Create Your Own Olympic Memento will be the craft program that coincides with the opening days of the Torino Olympics. On Sunday Feb. 12 and Monday, Feb. 13, kids of all ages can participate in Create Your Own Valentine just in time for the special day on Tuesday. Both craft programs are during library hours: Thursday, 10 - 7, Friday 10 - 6 Saturday 10 - 5, Sunday 1 - 5 and Monday 10 - 6. There are no charges for the drop-in programs and materials are supplied by the library.
Fairy tales toldChildren in grades K through 3 learn about stories from other lands and other times in Folklore and Fantasy on Saturday, Feb. 11 from 2 - 3 p.m. Whether it's folklore, tall tales, fairy tales or fantasy, children will hear about mythical beasts, magical forces and mesmerizing characters in this genre of literature. Symphony returns for familiesThe third part of the Norwalk Symphony Family Program (Not) Just for Kids will be held on Saturday, Feb. 18 from 1 - 2 p.m. at the library. Children ages 3 - 10 and their families will be able to experience the music of brass instruments. Orchestra members will play some pieces and let the children see the instruments up close. Knights reignThe Wilton Library Chess Club begins a new 6-week program on Thursday, Feb. 23 from 4 - 5 p.m. The program is for beginners to advanced players in grades K-12. The instructor for the series is Richard (RJ) Chambers, president of the Wilton High School chess club. Additional dates for the program are March 2, 9, 23, 30 and April 6. There is no session on March 16. The program fee is $20 per child. Seating is limited. Advance registration and payment is required. Disability workshopOn Tuesday, Feb. 21 Mary Henwood from the Wilton School district will speak about disability awareness in the Special Needs Workshop on Disability Awareness from 4 - 5:30 p.m. Ms. Henwood will share the full range of disabilities present in the community of Wilton. The workshop is open to everyone. There is no charge for the program. Advance registration is suggested. New teen music and DVDSThe Teen Services area may be under construction but new DVDs and CDs keep coming in for the teen collection. Latest to be added in DVDs are some classics such as Ghost, Monty Python and the Holy Grail, Ferris Bueller's Day Off, Never Been Kissed, and To Sir with Love. New DVDs just out are Smile, Dark Waters, Odd Girl Out, and The Best of American Idol (Seasons 1 - 4). Some new CDs include Fall Out Boy "From Under the Cork Tree"; John Mayer Trio "Try!"; Ashlee Simpson "I Am Me"; The All-American Rejects "The All-American Rejects"; The Pussycat Dolls "PCD"; A Band of Bees "Free the Bees" ; Weezer "Make Believe"; Destiny's Child "Destiny Fulfilled"; and Shelby Lynne "I Am Shelby Lynne". The rental fee for DVDs is $1 for two nights (non-premium channel TV DVDs are 7-days free). Music CDs are loaned out for two weeks at a time. Bonus days on DVDsWith the library closed on Sunday and Monday, Feb. 19 and 20 for Presidents Day, patrons get some bonus days when they take out DVDs on Friday or Saturday, Feb. 17 or 18. The two-day loan period would normally make the DVDs due on Sunday, but with the library closed on both Sunday and Monday, patrons get extra days for their DVD viewing for the same $1 rental fee. Premium channel series programs such as The Sopranos, Sex and the City, Six Feet Under may be titles that patrons might want to see with a few more days of viewing time for free.
