Today and tomorrow children of all ages can come to the library to create their own St. Patrick's Day crafts. Materials are supplied by the library and are set up in the new craft room for kids to drop-in at any time. There is no charge for the drop-in crafts program and reservations are not needed. Children read to man's best friendChildren in grades 1-5 get to sit down in a quiet corner of the library and read to certified therapy dogs on Saturday, March 18 from 2-3 p.m. The Read to Rover program is designed to encourage children to read aloud, which in turn builds stronger reading skills. The calm, gentle dogs provide a relaxing atmosphere to allow children to read at their own paces for 10-20 minutes. Children may bring books from home or use the library's collection. The Iliad exploredPopular guest lecturer Ann Martin returns to the library on Monday, March 20 from 10:30 - noon for the first of a six-part series entitled Homer's Iliad with Ann Martin. The series is on consecutive Monday, March 20, 27, April 3, 10, 17 and 24. The book is available for purchase at the circulation desk. Other copies are available for loan. There is no program charge. Writing workshop at libraryMany people feel they have the Great American Novel locked inside them and with a new workshop at the library they may be able to unleash their creative souls. On Wednesday, March 22 from 10 a.m.-1 p.m., Gotham Writers' Workshop instructor and author Susan Breen leads the Fiction Writing Workshop. This is a fun, fast-paced immersion in the craft of fiction writing. Topics for the three-hour session include plot and story structure, character development and point of view. A question and answer period about the business of writing also is part of the program. The Gotham Writer's Workshop is a leading creative writing school in New York City with fiction writing one of the most popular courses. There is no charge for the program. Young Readers get togetherKids who love to read and are members of the Young Readers Club at the library have a special program on Thursday, March 23 at 5 p.m. Hosted by library assistant Lesley Keogh, All About Books is a fun time for Young Readers to find out about the latest books that are coming to the library while enjoying some free pizza. Young Readers are children who love to read and want to support the library. Kids up to age 13 can become Young Readers with a $25 donation per year per child to the Friends of the Library. First time members to the club receive a Wilton Library Hippo book bag. All members are invited to special programs such as All About Books, receive discounted fees to programs and are able to extend children's DVD loan periods to seven days for the same one dollar rental. Getting the most out of interviewsAlan Nierenberg, author of Winning the Interview Game, presents his strategies, tactics and anecdotes about having the competitive edge in job interviews when he discusses his new book on Thursday, March 23 at 7 p.m. during the Visiting Author program. Whether a person is coming out of college or has been in the workforce for years, this discussion touches on preparing oneself for the interview, maintaining rapport with the interviewer, getting the competitive edge through the interview and presenting oneself in the best possible light. The author lives in Wilton and is the founder of an executive search firm. He has held senior management positions in national companies. The program is free of charge. Communication is keyOn Friday, March 24, from 9-11 a.m., the Library and the Wilton Chamber of Commerce co-sponsor What Skill is More Important Than Communication?, presented by Michael Crystal, Ph.D. During this interactive seminar, Dr. Crystal will help attendees better understand their own communications styles and that of others, become better listeners and generally improve flexibility, open-mindedness, versatility, adaptability, tolerance and outward focus.
