With May right around the corner, the library has Drop-In May Day Crafts for children of all ages takes place from Friday, April 28 through Monday, May 1. Supplies will be available, free of charge, in the Craft Room for kids to come in and make May Day creations such as garlands, fairy wantds, baskets and flowers for the May Day baskets. On Monday, May 1 at 1 p.m. a May Day celebration will take place at the library with children dancing around a real multi-colored May pole made special for the occasion. There are no program charges and reservations are not required.
Town meeting with Congressman ShaysU.S. Congressman Christopher Shays is holding a community town meeting at the library on Saturday, April 29 from 11:30-2. Congressman Shays will be discussing current issues with constituents. There is no charge for the program and reservations are not required.
Teens make jewelryJust in time for Mother's Day, the library offers Jewelry Making for Teens on Thursday, May 4 from 6-7:45 p.m. Kids in grades 7-12 will be working with semi-precious stones such as hematite, rose quartz, jasper and aventurine to form necklaces. Instruction will be given by Geralyn, a Connecticut artisan of handcrafted jewelry. The program fee is $10 per teen. The program is funded in part by the John J. and Pat A. Curran Teen Fund. Home and Garden series moves indoorsThe next part of the Home & Garden Series is on Thursday, May 4 at 7 p.m. with Interior Design 101. Local interior designers Stephanie Mercado and Kerry Brock discuss the basics of residential design including defining projects and goals, determining style, picking colors, planning room layouts, handling walls, windows and floors, choosing furniture, textiles and rugs, built-ins and storage, and accessories. A question and answer period will be part of the presentation. Additional dates and topics for the series are: Tuesday, May 9 Adding Character to New Homes; Thursday, May 11 Restoring, Remodeling or Adding Additions to Antique Homes and Thursday, May 18 Designer Tips-Staging Homes for Selling and Decorating Solutions. SPED*NET at libraryDonna Chauvin Quallen, M.Ed., C.A.S., a consultant, general and special educator, and former educational and Special Services Administrator, guides parents through the assessment process for special education needs in the SPED*NET seminar: Testing & Evaluations-Understanding Them and Making Them Useful, on Friday, May 5 from 10:30-1. Topics include what to look for in a good evaluation, types of tests, testing formats and commonly used evaluation tools and how to make the interpretation of test results and recommended educational strategies meaningful and useful to parents. J. Alden Weir art receptionAn art reception for the J. Alden Weir exhibition will take place on Friday, May 5 from 6-7:30. More than three dozen oils, pastels and prints are on display throughout the library until Saturday, May 27. The exhibit was curated by art historian and Wilton resident Joan Macy Kaskell. The works are from the National Park Service and private collections. The appeal for many of the collectors was in the style of Weir's impressionistic works and the fact that so much of his art is representative of this area. The reception is open to the public.
Baby safety discussedWhen it comes to new babies, many parents feel that an instruction manual would be very helpful especially when it relates to baby safety. The library is providing the next best thin to an instruction manual on Saturday, May 6 with the seminar, Baby Safety and Child Proofing Your Home from 10:30-11:30 a.m. New parents, grandparents and caregivers learn important safety and child proofing strategies in this educational session. Child safety experts will be on hand to answer questions on how to install products and help solve safety concerns for attendees. There is no charge for the program.
