Summer art show reception

The 62nd Annual Summer Art Exhibition opens on Friday, July 7 from 6-7:30 with the artists' reception. More than 40 Wilton artists showcasing their talents in diverse styles, media and subjects will display their works all around the library. Most of the artworks will be for sale with a portion of the proceeds benefiting the library. The exhibit runs through Wednesday, Aug. 30 and is open during library hours Monday and Friday 10-6; Tuesday through Thursday 10-7, Saturday 10-5. The library is closed Sundays in July and August.

Summer reading for students

School's out so the natural inclination for kids is to forego their reading for a stretch but the library wants to remind them to get a jump on it early so they can eliminate the mad dash in late August. Summer reading books for kids from middle school through high school now are neatly housed in the Teen Room to the right of the entry doors rather than on a cramped, rolling cart in the middle of reference. From classics such as David Copperfield by Charles Dickens to contemporary American fiction such as The Lovely Bones by Alice Sebold, the books are easily accessible. Summer reading lists from Wilton district schools, Our Lady of Fatima, Greens Farms Academy, St. Luke's School, New Canaan Country Day School and Staples High School are kept in a binder in the Teen Room for kids to use as a guide. With the new Read 'Em and Reap Teen Summer Reading Program, kids in grades 7-12 can read the summer reading books or other fiction and non-fiction books to receive bookmarks and tattoo decals and to be eligible for weekly raffles of coupons from local merchants for ice cream, coffee/beverages, and pizza. The teen reading program is sponsored by the John and Patricia Curran Teen Fund. Kids can find out more about Read 'Em and Reap on the library's Web site at www.wiltonlibrary.org, from the library staff or through the flyer in the Teen Room. Children in grades 1-5 can find their reading lists and books in the Children's Library. For more information: 762-3950.

Good beach reading on sale

Summer is a good time to catch up on some reading and the library has an ongoing sale in the lobby of adult paperback and hardcover books that may be perfect for vacations by the lake, shore, mountains or even one's own backyard. Picture and chapter books also are on sale in the Children's Library year-round.

The library always welcomes donations of gently-used books, DVDs and CDs. Donations may be dropped off at the covered grey book bin at the back door of the old library building (near the stairs). For large quantities, people may call 227-8502 or (203) 377-1831 to arrange for pick-ups. Books sold in the lobby and in the annual book sales help to fund the library's operating budget.

Reminder: Library is closed on Tuesday, July 4 and Sundays through September 3.
