The library's 6th annual Summer Music & More Concert Series opens with Chance Browne and the Twinkies this evening from 5-6:30. Chance and his band have been headlining the library's popular outdoor event since the beginning six years ago. The concert series is being sponsored for the sixth year in a row by the Village Market. At each concert, more than one hundred people get to experience the music, and this year the concerts will take place even if it rains now that the new Brubeck Room is available. The concerts are on four consecutive Thursday nights in July as follows: Chance Browne and the Twinkies tonight; Studs on the Run (rock with reggae influence) and Riding Shotgun (jazz), two teen bands on July 13; Wilton native Jeff Harding and Frank Licari return to the library on July 20 and Doug Leess and Wiltonian Ron Brault represent The Wingnuts (unplugged) on July 27. Michael Crystal, founder of the Grand Crew Wine Club will provide wine for the concerts for the third straight year. The food, refreshments, wine and concerts are all free. For information: 762-3950.
Summer art show opens Friday nightThe 62nd annual Wilton Library Summer Art Exhibition opens with a reception tomorrow, July 7 from 6-7:30. More than 40 artists will have one or two artworks represented in the show. Oils, watercolors, pastels, drawings and sculptures Returning favorite artists and new exhibitors in the show will have works on display in myriad styles, on diverse subjects using various media such as oils, watercolors, pastels, drawing and sculptures. The majority of the works will be available for sale with a portion of the proceeds benefiting the library. The exhibit runs through Wednesday, Aug. 30 during library hours which are Monday and Friday 10-6; Tuesday through Thursday 10-7, Saturday 10-5. The library is closed on Sundays in the summer. Special story timeChildren ages 3-6 will have a Special Guest Reader Story Time on Tuesday, July 11 from 11-11:30. Chris Falkner, a library staff member, will read to kids during this extra time. Chris is a biomedical engineering major at the University of Connecticut. He started working at the library when he was at Wilton High School, where he enjoyed success in the theater program. Movies for TeensThis summer kids entering grades 7-12 have Teen Movie Tuesdays from 5-7 p.m. every other Tuesday starting July 11. The first movie is First Descent and will be shown on the library's large screen projection system. The movies are free along with the popcorn. Kids are invited to bring their friends and hang out. Additional dates: July 25 Monty Python and the Holy Grail, Aug. 8 Napoleon Dynamite and Aug. 22 Airplane. The movies are free and registration is not required. Earth discovered and craftedKids ages 3-18 have a chance to learn about rain forests, eco-systems and the impact of humans on the Earth on Wednesday, July 12 when the Earth Balloon is unveiled in the library's Brubeck Room. The eco-centric program features a gigantic model of Earth, which is actually a balloon 22 feet in diameter, 19 feet high that kids enter to learn more. Children meet in 15, 20 and 30-minute sessions based on their ages. The program begins at 10:30 and ends at 4:40. Time slots are assigned by age group so that each group's information is disseminated in an age-appropriate manner. There is no charge for the program. Advance registration is required. On Thursday, July 13 from 2-3 p.m., the Read, Recycle & Renew craft program follows the theme of the Earth Balloon with Earth crafts. Children ages 3 - 7 will be able to enjoy a story, refreshments and make Earth placemats and necklaces. The summer reading program is sponsored by the Betsy and Jesse Fink Foundation. Internet auction site discussedBuying and Selling on eBay will be covered by guest lecturer Tom Greenbaum on Wednesday, July 12 (buying) and Wednesday, July 19 (selling) both at 7 p.m. During this demonstration-style class, Greenbaum will share tips with the audience on how to master the Internet auction site.
