During the dog days of August, kids can find cool relief at the library and catch some free movies at the same time during Reel Fridays at 10:30 and 2 on August 4 and 11. Take a nature walk with a wild manWildman Steve Brill, an environmental educator, takes kids and their parents on a walk on the wild side on Wednesday, August 9 from 2-3 p.m. on Schenck's Island in Wilton through the library's Read, Recycle & Renew summer reading program. The nature walk introduces kids to organic herbs, greens, berries and mushrooms that flourish in Wilton, oftentimes in their own backyards. Children and their parents or caregivers will meet directly at the Schenck's Island parking lot. Everyone should be dressed in long pants and closed shoes. Attendees should bring gloves and plastic grocery bags. If the weather is inclement, the program will be held at the library. There is no charge for the program. Crafts from recycled thingsOn Thursday, August 10 from 2-3 p.m. kids ages 3-7 will be making creative items from things that are thrown away. Read, Recycle & Renew Craft Program - Recycled Crafts is part of the summer reading program sponsored by the Betsy and Jesse Fink Foundation. A story, craft and refreshments are all part of the fun. Bats in the belfryThe library may not actually have a belfry, but there will be bats in the Brubeck Room when the Bat Lady comes on Wednesday, August 16 from 2-3 p.m. Gerri Griswold of Winsted, a.k.a the Bat Lady, visits the library with her bats to teach kids about the importance of bats in ecology. Summer reading program endsChildren celebrate the end of the summer reading program on Wednesday, August 16 from 3:15-4:30 with party balloons, games, prizes and refreshments. They also will be able to take home their colorful Earth designs on which they placed their stickers all summer long. Library overrun with pirates, cowboys and cowgirlsThe reading program may end on August 16, but that is not the end of the fun at the library for the summer. The week of August 21 through 25 is Pirate Week at the library. Kids will be able to pick up eye patches and get the makings of cool pirate hats while they choose from a new selection of pirate books during the week.
The week of August 28 through September 1 is Young Readers Round-up. Programs for preschoolers to kindergarteners abound with Robert the Guitar Guy on Tuesday, August 29 from 11-11:45; Drop-in Story Times on Wed., Aug. 30 from 10:15-10:45 for kids ages 2-5 and from 2-2:30 for kids ages 4-6; and Drop-In Cowboy & Cowgirl Crafts on Thursday, August 31 from 10-3 for kids ages 1-6.
