Ahoy mates!

Children of all ages are invited to join the fun Monday, August 21 through Friday, August 25 during Pirate Week at the library. Kids can borrow new pirate books, sport eye patches, and receive the makings for pirate hats which can be crafted at home. Reservations are not needed for kids to enjoy the week. For information, call 762-3950.

"Classic" movie for teens

The Teen Movie Tuesdays presentation on August 22 is the side-splitting "classic," Airplane at 5 p.m. Kids in grades 7-12 can enjoy the free movie with friends on a large screen projection system at the library. The popcorn also is free. This is the last of the Teen Movie Tuesdays for this summer sponsored by Louis Dreyfus Corporation. There is no charge for the movie and reservations are not required. Kids can come in out of the heat and share a few laughs. For information: 762-3950.

Early evening story time

The library is a cool place on a hot summer evening to let the kids wind down with Sleepytime Story Time from 6-6:30 on Thursday, August 24. Children ages 3-5 come to the library in their pajamas with their favorite teddy bears or blankets to listen to stories that will send them off to dreamland once they get home. There is no charge for the story time program. Advance registration is suggested. Call 762-3950 or register online.

Howdy, partner

Little kids can saddle up for Young Readers Round-up the week of August 28 through September 1. While big brothers and sisters go off to school, young-uns will have programs at the library just for them. On Tuesday, August 29 from 11-11:45 a.m., Robert the Guitar Guy will entertain pre-school and kindergarten children with a program that incorporates music, rhythm, movement, humor, role-playing and props. Advance registration is suggested. Call 762-3950 or register online. Drop-In Story Times are available for kids on Wednesday, August 30 in two sessions. All cowboys and cowgirls ages 2-5 are invited to the 10:15-10:45 a.m. story time; the 2-2:30 session is for children ages 4-6. On Thursday, August 31 from 10-3, Drop-In Cowboy/Cowgirl Crafts will take place where kids can come in and make their own crafty creations. All of the programs listed above are sponsored by the Young Readers Group. There is no charge and registration is not required.

Special attention is being given to the Young Readers Group this week at the library. Children develop a lifelong love of reading and the library when introduced to both in the early stages of their young lives. This week's programs are sponsored by the Young Readers Group and are free to all. Children can join the Young Readers Group, a subset of the Friends of the Library, with a contribution of $25 per child or $75 for a family. Each new child member receives a hippo book bag. New and returning Young Readers members will receive special cards that allow them to rent children's DVDs for 7-days rather than the customary 2-day rentals for the same price. Volunteers will be available during Young Readers Round-up to answer any questions for patrons. For more information about becoming a Young Reader, call 762-3950.

ELF keeps things on track

The library is introducing a new service that will help people keep track of their library material due dates with e-mail and TXT messaging notifications. The program is called LibraryELF and is a very simple tool that lets patrons know when items are due, coming due or overdue, keeps track of requests ready for pickup and can provide information on all the library accounts in one family, thereby making the trip to the library more productive. Patrons can sign-up for the service through the library's Web site at www.wiltonlibrary.org/books/emailnotices.htm. A link is provided on the left side of the homepage. It is an easy process that simply requires the Wilton Library card bar code. Additional family members' cards may be added to the account so that the seemingly endless list of pictures books on a child's card may also be tracked. Patrons may choose either e-mail as a method of notification or TXT messaging on a cell phone, along with the number of days in advance of due dates and how often the notification should appear. ELF is a third-party service not affiliated with Wilton Library. For more information or help registering, contact Mary Anne Franco, Head of Technology Services at the library at 762-3950 ext. 210.
