Guest speaker Gorel Bogarde takes readers on a journey to Sweden tonight during the International Book Group: Literature of Other Lands discussion at 7 p.m. The Swedish mystery, Blackwater by Kerstin Ekman is used as the backdrop for Ms. Bogarde's discussion of her native country. Refreshments and an international dessert will be served. Creativity for little kidsAnother session of Art Program for Preschoolers is on Friday, September 29 from 10:30 - 11:30 a.m. for children ages 3 - 5. Illustrator Emma Sutherland teaches children how to create craft with recycled materials. Smocks will be provided for the session. Norwalk Symphony Family Program (Not) Just for KidsThe Norwalk Symphony Family Program (Not) Just for Kids begins this season on Saturday, September 30 from 2 - 3 p.m. with the first of the four-part series. Children ages 3-10 and their families are invited to this interactive performance by members of the woodwind section of the Norwalk Symphony orchestra. Additional dates for the program are Saturday, October 28 for strings; January 27 for percussion and April 7 for brass. Wellness month at the libraryMany programs in October at the library are part of the Wellness Month series with informative sessions on heart health, acupuncture, online resources and much more. Immunizations are discussed on Tuesday, October 3 from 10:30-11:30 a.m. with Margarita Shapiro from Nursing & Home Care. The talk centers on health issues and immunizations for adults, such as inoculations for flu season, pneumonia and tetanus/diphtheria. Ms. Shapiro will give a brief history of immunizations and pandemics in society. Take-away materials will be available. On Thursday, October 5, Dr. Pamela Charney discusses heart issues in the program, Protecting Your Heart at 7 p.m. At 6 p.m. before Dr. Charney's talk, blood pressure screenings will be given free of charge. Dr. Peter J. D'Adamo speaks about structuring one's diet according to blood type, based on his book, Eat Right 4 Your Type on Thursday, October 12 at 7 p.m. Healing and Aesthetic Benefits of Acupuncture is discussed on Tuesday, October 17 at 7 with Simone Wan, a licensed acupuncturist. A demonstration of the technique will be given. Reference librarians Mary Anne Franco and Carolyn Benjamin will help de-mystify the Internet and show participants how to be their own health advocates using online health resources on Thursday, October 19 at 7. On Tuesday, October 24 at 7, Dr. Elihu Rosen and Barbara Rudolph, R.N., M.S. discuss Chiropractic Care. All of the programs are free of charge. Advance registration is suggested. An artist's retrospectiveThe October art exhibition at the library opens on Friday, October 6 from 6-7:30 p.m. with a span of work from Jean Haughey. The show will have close to sixty paintings, predominantly watercolors, from the Wilton nonagenarian. Haughey began her career in her sixties, having studied with Cornelia Ford, Charles Reid and Robert Baxter at Silvermine and Anne Toulman-Roth in Westport. She has exhibited widely in the area and in Vermont. According to the artist, "This exhibit is a look back at my work-from scenes of old Wilton and local buildings to flowers that I love, to food in my kitchen-it is a reflection of places and things that bring me joy." The paintings are available for purchase with a portion of the proceeds benefiting the library. The exhibition runs through Monday, October 30. For information: (203) 762-3950.
