The library continues this month's Wellness series with Protecting Your Heart tonight at 7 with Dr. Pamela Charney, a member of Norwalk Hospital faculty and a nationally recognized leader in medical education and general internal medicine. Dr. Charney discusses the symptoms of heart disease and reviews current prevention guidelines. Preceding the seminar, Nursing & Home Care personnel will be giving free blood pressure screenings from 6 - 7. Next Thursday, October 12 at 7, Dr. Peter D'Adamo, a naturopathic surgeon and author, has a discussion based on his book, Eat Right 4 Your Type. His talk explores the blood type dietary approach to preventing and treating disease. Books will be available for purchase and signing. There is no charge for either program. Artist's opening reception FridayWilton resident Jean Haughey will have an opening reception of her art exhibition, "A Retrospective," on Friday, October 6 from 6 - 7:30 p.m. Mrs. Haughey, who is in her nineties, will be exhibiting close to 60 watercolors and acrylics that represent the last 25 years of her life in which she began painting. The exhibit runs through Monday, October 30. All of the paintings are available for purchase with a portion of the proceeds benefiting the library. Wilton Library Readers meetSusan Boyar leads the discussion of The Moonstone, the tale about Victorian life by Wilkie Collins, on Wednesday, October 11 from noon to 1:30 p.m. The group meets every second Wednesday of the month through May (except December). There is no charge for the book group discussion, nor are reservations needed. It is suggested that participants bring their lunches. Beverages are provided by the library. A scavenger huntOn Friday, October 13 from 7-9 p.m., kids in grades 5 and 6 will take part in Survivor Night at the Library. Kids will be sent scurrying around the library in search of items that will help them "survive" the night. Refreshments will be served. There is no charge for the program. Ann Martin series beginsAnn Martin, popular guest literary lecturer, returns to the library on Monday, October 16 from 10:30 - noon for The Guns Fell Silent. This 6-part series on consecutive Mondays-October 16, 23, 30, November 6, 13 and 20, looks at the human struggles and realities left by wars -in which guns have not fallen silent. The first two books to be read before the program begins are The Sun Also Rises by Ernest Hemingway and Lord of the Flies by William Golding. Additional titles to be explored in the series are Dawn by Elie Wiesel, The Things They Carried by Tim O'Brien and The Good Soldier by Ford Madox Ford. Books are available for loan or purchase. Calling young artistsChildren ages 3 - 5 will create crafts with recycled materials on Friday, October 13 from 10:30 - 11:30 a.m. during the Art Program for Preschoolers. Illustrator Emma Sutherland returns to show children how inventive they can be in this popular class at the library. Smocks will be provided for this very creative event.
