Teens, parents and the college application processAsk teens about applying to colleges and they may shiver with excitement and anticipation. Ask parents about the prospect and they may shiver with dread and concern. Whatever the reaction, Howard and Matthew Greene bring their expert insights and calming demeanors to Present Trends in College Admissions and Financial Aid on Tuesday, October 17 at 7 p.m. The Greenes, nationally-recognized educational consultants, provide strategies and tips for parents and students facing the college application process. With colleges dropping early decision options daily, there now seems to be more confusion than ever. The seminar is the night before the tri-town College Fair at Wilton High School, so parents and teens may be better prepared for a more successful night among the 200 represented colleges. There is no charge for the Greenes' seminar. Advance registration is suggested. Call 762-3950 or register online.
Big days ahead in OctoberThe program calendar is chocked full this October with wellness seminars, craft days for kids, museum bus trips and book group discussions. In and among all these activities, the library has three special events on one weekend--the Children's Book Sale, Discovery Day and Hazardous Materials and Used Book Collection Day. The Children's Book Sale takes place on Friday, October 20 from 3-6 p.m. and Saturday, October 21 from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Picture books, chapter books, teen books, DVDs and videos will be for sale along with a silent auction in the Brubeck Room. On Saturday, local author Skip Ploss will be reading from his books and doing book signings at 1:30, 2 and 2:30. Also on Saturday, the second Wilton Library Discovery Day happens from 11-2. Free food, musical entertainment from Bob Riccio and his Dixieland band (weather permitting) and Arthur Lipner on his vibes, new product and services demonstrations, and flower arranging are just some of the activities scheduled for the three-hour, lively event.
Patrons also are encouraged to bring their gently-used books and DVDs to Cider Mill School from 9-3 pm on Saturday for the Used Book Collection Day, part of the town's Hazardous Collection Day. A truck will be available to haul away the donated books. These items are a mainstay of the successful annual book sale, children's book sale and the year round sale of books in the library lobby. Hazardous materials will be collected by the town at Middlebrook. For more information on any of these events: www.wiltonlibrary.org or call 762-3950.
